Tao Tao rhino 250 not moving while in gear

I was having some troubles with the rhino running tonight so I was drifting backwards down a hill slowly while in reverse and the atv not running. My hand slipped off the clutch and the atv jerked as it would if you were trying to coast start it. Not violently since I was barely moving. Anyway. It not running was a battery issue so I swapped batteries and it fired up but now it won’t move in gear. I noticed that the chain is very loose now and is dragging on the front sprocket cover. When it is in gear the engine doesn’t load down and no strange noises come from the engine. I’m a total noob to small engines and atv engines. What do you think I broke? It’s dark outside now so I didn’t have a chance to tear into it.

Sounds like the transmission output shaft may have broke. Try taking the cover off where the chain goes into the engine and inspect.

It’ll suck if that’s it. It only has 5 hours on it

I'm with Bruces. Chain is probably off the front sprocket. Breaking the countershaft is highly unlikely. The tensioner can make the chain seem tight even when its very loose. Chain should be adjusted with tensioner removed.

The front sprocket had lost it’s retainer and fell off the shaft. Easy fix.
