Tbr7 stearing stem loose!

Hi all, my 2020 tbr7, front end had a clunk sound on sharp bumps. I jacked it up and pulled on the front forks all different ways to see if it was loose, couldn't feel any play. I thought the forks maybe clunking inside, did the oil, more preload, little more oil.... have the bike a month now, checked the top nut on the steering stem (under the handlebars) not even 5ft.pounds tight! Tightened the adjusting nut more than 1/4 turn, much better. Might tightened a LITTLE more this weekend but the clunk is 99% gone. Just a heads up! (Lol)
Check all hardware.
Christopher

If you are going to go back in there take the tine to grease those bearings. You will be amazed at how little is on them (almost none).

That should of been part of the initial set up when you first got the bike ,along with greasing the steering head bearings .I doubt there is very many threads about setting up a new bike on here that don’t say to check all the bolts and nuts and loctite what you can .

Hi all. 30mm socket?.. I didn't need one to loosen it up, could have used pliers!. When I do get a 30mm socket ill take it all apart and grease it right.I was able to get an adjustable wrench in there with the bars off,I put a screwdriver through the opposite end that had the hole and and got it pretty tight. That let .me know where the clunk was.

My socket set goes up to 56mm in 3/4 drive.

Just grab a cheapie if you need one. Or use an adjustable and the gutundtight measuring system

This will do the job just fine. https://www.amazon.com/TEKTON-Drive-...353018&sr=8-31

Zongshen lists the top triple clamp nut torque spec at 50ft-lbs for the TT250, if you are a torque spec kind of person. If it's right for that bike, it's fine for the rest of us.

Best change these to taper bearings from your local bearing shop.
There should be a spec to preload the bearing - bigger modern China bikes is about 50Nm but that may or may not apply here.
there should be a preload but move free with little resistance once assembled.

I do agree that taper bearings are a worthy upgrade, but the cup and cone ball bearings these come with work adequately.

Not sure if there is any difference with the other bikes, but the Hawk uses a Honda bearing set/kit you can get from All balls racing for about 35 bucks that fits about half of every Honda ever made, and the Hawk as well. Comes with both bearings and two seals.
https://www.amazon.com/All-Balls-22-.../dp/B01BOZE4CY

I installed that kit on my Last hawk.

As far as preload to seat the tapered bearings. I used XR200/250 specs, which is 22lb-ft (30nm), turn the triple back and forth a few times, and then loosen. From there you can tighten to 3.3 lb-ft (39-40 lb/in) if you REALLY want to go all out with the torque specs. Or just do what most of us do and re-tighten that top nut so the steering turns freely with just a hint of drag.

Once upon a time I used to fix very large machines at a different facility lol. All of the equipment I work on now is lucky to have anything bigger than 10mm, but the amount of electronics is off the scale by comparison. Whole new tool set and skill set.
