Hawk 250 Rear Sprocket & Chain Recommendation

Hello folks, I am a new Hawk 250 owner and am looking to gain a bit more top-end speed on my bike. If I were to change just the rear sprocket, and leave the front sprocket stock, what rear sprocket size would be most recommended to gain a little more speed? And with that sprocket change, what size chain (link number) should I buy for the recommended sprocket size?

I am hoping to find a rear sprocket that would give me a few more MPH, AND be lucky enough to find the proper chain size where I wouldnt need to remove any links and just install as it is. Can anyone suggest a rear sprocket and chain combo to achieve this?

THANKS!!!

Going up a couple of teeth on the front sprocket is roughly equivalent to dropping several teeth on the rear sprocket. If you replace the stock front 15T sprocket with a 17T, and drop down to a 43T or 45T in the rear (stock is 50T), you'll be able to use your stock chain with no modification, no need to remove links on your chain. Your top speed should reach into the low 60mph range or better with a 17T/45T or 43T combo. If you only change the rear sprocket, you'd probably have to drop down to a 40T to get the equivalent of a 17T/45T combo on the stock 15T front sprocket (my math may be slightly off there). Since your rear sprocket would be considerably smaller, you could remove links from the stock chain or go with a 428 chain and remove links from that one to properly fit your sprocket combo.

I have the 40 tooth on the rear. Like Chris stated a 15 on front is close to the 17/45 most are using and will work good for off road. I run a 17 on front for just highway and 15 for off road. I occasionally will run the 16 if I know I'll be doing some mixed on and off road. This is the reason I went with the 40 on the rears. Because just by swapping the front sprocket, it's quick and easy swap to adjust to where you are riding.
Here's a sprocket calculator that will help. http://woodsware.aciwebs.com/gears/ Just type Hawk in the filter and select 2016 Haosen Hawk 250. I have already enter the Stock configuration for my 2016 Hawk 250.

Thanks guys. So if I were to get a 40T rear sprocket (and keep the stock front sprocket), the correct chain should be 130-Link, rights? I would like to get a better chain for piece of mind and was thinking of a RK Racing Chain M428H-130 (428 Series) 130-Link with the 40T rear sprocket.

Does this all seem like a sound decision? Thanks.

I'm using a 128 link chain which works perfect with all three sprockets. I just ordered a new 128 link O-ring chain. When it came in it was a 136 link. So I'll have to cut it anyway. Not hard to do.

Here's the link. https://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-TTR2...ty!70364!US!-1

OK, so I am thinking that the right chain for my combo should be this chain: Unibear 428H 128 links. I am thinking that this should be the perfect chain for a 15T/40T combo and I wont have to remove links. Any opinions on the brand name of this chain?

Thanks!

That's a good chain for street use and trail riding. If you plan on any off roading with muddy and wet conditions then consider an O-ring chain. I had to pull my chain and clean it every time I went off road. Lots of fine sandy mud where I go and it ate up my chain pretty quick. That's why I just switched over to an O-ring chain.

I've people having issues removing/replacing that rear sprocket. That spring gives people . Just wondering, if I move to a 17T front ONLY, how will that change my speed? The main road outside of my neighborhood has a speed limit of 55mph.

I use this mainly as a commuter/short trips bike.

With a good pair of snap ring pliers it's not that hard to remove and put back on. A 17T front will help some but the engine will still be screaming at 55mph. I would go with at least a 45T on the rear for a good all around gear ratio. From there you could use the stock 15T or a 16T or 17T depending on if you want to ride off road or highway.

New here

Just bought a 250 hawk. Wanna change sprockets first. I’m missing plastics. Anywhere I can find em? It’s missing everything that makes it an enduro(lights, horn, mirrors, etc. when it comes to wiring, do I need a battery? What about rectifier and all? Anyone help I’m new to this having a bike and adding on.

Generally replying to a thread more than a year old is not recommended.

Might want to create a new thread about your issues. Will get more views and comments.

NO idea where to find the missing plastics, see if you can call any of the dealers around the country; they may be able to order them for you, or sell them if they are in stock.

Why would you not need a battery? This bike does not have a magneto ignition system, it's CDI. So a battery is required. Rectifier, of course.

Did you buy this bike stripped and in parts boxes? Where are all of these essential items?
