Performance exhaust without the excessive noise?

Hey All,

I'm looking to add one of the aftermarket exhausts to drop some weight and improve the performance of my Raven / BSR 250 as I'm learning to ride and don't want the locals to hate me. I don't have the tools to decat and re-weld the stock exhaust, so I'm looking to pick up one of these cheap options and have some money left for a silencer:

Option 1

Option 2

These seem to be a copy of the JFG Racing exhaust that AresRoc put on his Raven in his build thread which fit perfectly with no mod.

So questions are:
1. Any concerns with this plan?

2. anyone have a link to a silencer that would fit this exhaust? I've heard some people say the one in the stock exhaust can be re-used...

I used the Amazon Special Stoneman. It's similar to the eBay one you linked to.

I was able to take the db killer/spark arrestor from the oe muffler and cut the diameter of the disc down to fit inside the Stoneman muffler and that quieted it down a good bit. The negative of doing so is the plastic cone at the rear melted.

You'll also have to bend the pipes a bit and drill out the flange hole. Not going to lie, it was a pain and I'm still not quite happy with my work.

Probably best route to take would be to cut the cat out and re-weld and stick with the stock muffler.. should net you the power gains without the excess noise

If you want to keep it quiet and not have to worry about welding you can just cut the cat completely off and replace that section of pipe and clamp it. I'm sure you could find a slightly larger pipe that would slip over the existing exhaust pipe at the auto parts or a muffler shop.

Thanks for the responses so far everyone, really helpful.

While we're at it, how much worse is the exhaust going to smell if I go to an ebay exhaust / remove the cat?

I don't think the NoX from a 230CC engine is going to be the end of the world, but I do keep the bike in a townhouse backyard and have an HOA - so not pissing off neighbors is in my best interest.

It's a shame the stock cat is SO restrictive and not more like the higher flow options (which are obviously less effective but better than nothing).

With the stock carb and my exhaust I didn't notice the smell being any better or worse than before. After installing a new carb and tuning it, I'd say it's about the same. Either way, no worse than a 4 stroke lawn mower and better than a 2 stroke weed whacker.

If I had to do it all over again on our TT250, I'd cut the cat out of the stock exhaust and leave it at that. The Ebay exhaust, which also looks like the Stonemen and others listed, was just far too loud after a while to my old ears. Annoying.

I made a baffle out of a piece of aluminum pipe off of a piece of furniture, also wrapped the exhaust tip with as much header wrap as I could fit under the plastic. Turned the tip into a silencer. It works good, still sounds throaty and deeper, it’s still a bit loud but way better.
