Lets get speede back on the road!!

so here is the story:

at the start of summer speede lost its exhaust. slowly the bike got worse and worse. I ended up buying an xl600r and rode that until it got stolen. I then bought a klx650 (which I drive now) and poor ole speede has been sitting ever since. Its been about 8 months now.

so last week I started to work on her.

I cleaned out the carb and redid the fuel line and got it cranked for the first time in a lonnnnggg time.

now the thing runs like it used to, I can start moving but as soon as it start revving up the thing starts to hesitate. As soon as I shift gears its normal again till it gets up in the mid range and I have to shift gears. I cant go above 20mph. The thing putters and stubles around.

I am not sure what to do. any suggestions?

Here are some notes:

She has a new head pipe and exhaust off an old honda xl200
Cleaned carb
Cleaned airfilter
Oil should be ok, but I might need to check that
Battery is ok

You could flush the gas and try fresh stuff.

what air filter do you have on it ?

what is the condition of the spark plug ?

What condition is the spark plug lead ? does it fit the plug end snuggly ?

what main jet (size) do you have in it ? (that XL exhaust will most likely require a larger main jet to run right)

have you checked the ignition coil wires to make sure they are all completely connected ?
(I had a snowmobile that would run fine at lower speeds but would break up and miss at high speeds-it was bared wired rubbing)

Are you sure the float bowl level is correct ?

have you taken the carb apart and cleaned every passage and reassembled it correctly ?

have you inspected the air intake manifold for leaks ?

I had a similar problem not too long ago - engine ran great until about 3-4,000 rpm, then it would stumble and break up.
I thought I checked all the wiring, but it turned out to be a wire coming out of one of the ignition wire plugs under the seat. Try disconnecting and then reconnecting all the ignition wire plugs. It's worth a shot and doesn't cost anything.

if you still can't find the area turn off the lights make sure it is good and dark, and rev it up. you might be able to see the sparkarching on the frame.

So, you have a klx 650 too?!?!?! You like all the extra ponies? they also make great supermotos.

maby frosty should rename this site chinacbklxriders.net

dirty jet...I know you cleaned the carb but something can be coming from tank into carb or from air filter seal into carb...

Stumble as reving=fuel restriction or electrical connection being jiggled

yeah I got a klx that was uncrated in 2001. It only had 3000 miles when I bought it so its practically a new bike. Its also an R model with a baja designs kit and a dyno jet kit.

I'd love to Moderate

I won't have the cash to do what I want, to my cb this winter, but I'll get some of it done. The motor will be better than new, but I'll have to forget about some of the custom parts and chroming I wanted to do.

can you take a picture of what the wire looked like and what it connected to? or maybe just describe it?

I have a wire leading to a black rubber cylinder looking thing that was loose (it was under the seat)

Things under the seat. Coil/CDI/Starter Relay/Turn Signal Flasher.

The Coil is the thing connected to the sparkplug lead. Connected to that should be the CDI. A loose wire here could give some running issues easily.

The starter relay should have two larger terminals and one coming from the battery positive and the other to the starter. Then a wire coming from the switch.

sometimes if something is in the carb you can force it out by revving the engine pretty hard then chokeing it off with your hand take the air cleaner off and smack your palm over the opening it may flood but it uses the vaccum of the engine to pull gas on through sometimes it works i use this method regular with a lot of good results and it takes minutes hope this helps

A dirty gas filter can do that.
