What the heck is that rattle???

Any time I ride my GY-5 in every gear something rattles when it revs. It sounds like it is under the gas tank. Can't find it. Skid plate is not loose. It is very loud and very annoying.

Do you have one of those big black metal plates that your license plate sits on?
My license plate was rattling in every gear as the rpm's rose.
It sounded like something around the engine was vibrating.

I finally glued 2 rubber hose washers under the bottom portion of the license plate.
Rattle gone.

Also you might check the heat shields on the exhaust to make sure they aren't loose.

Built my own licence plate bracket, took that monster one off, no rattle from that any more, also check your keys, if you have more than just the bike key on your key chain, rubber band them together ie. house keys, shop keys...

You have quite a job ahead of you if you do. I took mine to the machine shop and did cut the ends. I removed the entire baffle and sleave. Then welded the ends back just like stock, repainted and you can't tell the difference from stock except a slightly louded exhaust note. Not too much and it does rev up a lot quicker. The only thing is you will have to find a press or something to get the sleeved baffle unit out. I used the 55 ton press. I tried other avenues first but this was the only way this thing was gonna come out. The other option would be to just replace it with an aftermarket performance exhaust.

I had already fixed the license plate rattle. It wasn't that. It is definitely coming from up under the gas tank somewhere. All my heat shields are tight and so is my skid plate. If it is in the exhaust, it is inside it somewhere, because it seems tight, too. AAAARRRRRGGHHHH!!!

Being a push rod engine a little noise is normal, have you taken the tank off and checked underneath?

Yes, I took the tank off and couldn't see anything loose. I don't think it is engine noise. It sounds like a vibration noise. It only happens through a certain rpm range. If it gets up closer to 6k rpm, it doesn't do it as bad.

You might check your horn. I had a rattle that I couldn't find, then one day my horn was dangling by the wire. Yanked it off and ever since - no rattle! Guess I better mount it back up for inspection before the reg is due.

Did you ever find the rattle?

Hi there,

I have checked and double checked every nut and bolt on this bike, and even installed rubber washers in a number of areas. I still have the rattle. I have tried to isolate the vibration without any luck. My next step is top remove the air fins in the front, and the tank skin plastics. I have about 300 miles on my GY now, and this is the last thing to be buttoned up.

Any info appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome Ayjay,
I've rippped my bike down to bare and reassembled it and it still has a rattle or 2, not all the time...I think it's the nature of these bikes and that's what makes them fun, wish I could give you an answer but you'll find it and post for all of us to see...China bikes rule...
