Alan,
I was very sorry to read about this incident. If there is one bright side; nothing seems to be radically permanent, i.e. paralysis or death, but you still suffered some serious enough injuries. Yes, the lesson for all of us is to try to remain alert enough for whatever might get in front of us. I have had dogs try to chase me, and the old, pull on the gas and leave them in the "dust" works best. However, the danger is not always presenting itself from the side, but the front, too. The amount of coyote and dog carcassas that I pass by almost daily in my car, now combined with your unfortunate accident, reminds me of the extreme danger that is out there for the 2-wheeler. Recover as fast as you can, but don't eat too much of your product. It tastes good, but you'll just get fat!! Simon

I appreciate all the words of encouragement and thoughtfulness. The company I contract out for sent a rep down to do my job, but I had to ride with him. Needless to say, I stayed doped up on hydro's all day and no I don't have any extra Had a lawyer contact me today also, so hopefully I'll be getting the medical bills taken care of. I don't want anything extra, I just feel that if you've got a stupid dog that you can't control, keep it tied up or fenced up, leash law or not.

dammage was minimal to the bike, it bent the shifter, scratched the side pannel and front fender, cracked a mirror, and broke one of the front blinkers. I'll probably touch up the scratches with some spraypaint, go with only one mirror and get an aftermarket set of blinkers, the stock ones were crappy anyways. I look at this experience as a wakeup call, I've never been one to wear a helment or protective gear, but now I've been preaching about it, I was lucky this time.

anyone that wrecks a bike and doesnt bite the big one is very lucky. Chinabikes can be fixed, people sometimes cannot. I would say go ahead and throw in the costs of your bike when filing the case against the people with the dog. Worst case is that you dont see any money, best case would be that you get your bike fixed for no charge.

Accidents!
Back in 1999, I high-sided a Buell at 35mph. Thankfully, I was wearing protective gear (helmet and leather jacket in 98 degree weather). You can't take the gear for granted, it will save you! ATGATT! All The Gear All The Time! It's your responsibility to make it home to your family. There are too many that don't. I also believe that it should be a personal decision. The government has far too many, more important things to be doing than to be bothered with whether or not I have a helmet on my head. Think of the wasted money that has been spent on helmet laws and lobbying for or against them. What a waste!
In my accident, I shattered my left clavical when I landed on my head and left shoulder. The helmet was trashed! I was in serious pain for weeks. I couldn't make it off the couch without my wife's help. Forget getting upstairs and into bed. That wasn't happening! I have never been the same, since the accident. bfe71730, glad you weren't seriously hurt. The bike can easily be fixed. Take care and get well! |

Does this article discuss what is the right thing to do with a high side incident?

Few things people feel stronger about than their dogs and children. Perhaps it would be a good idea to close this thread before anymore feelings get bruised. This has been an exceptionally friendly forum so far. It would be a shame to spoil that.
