Wish you didn't drill out your pipe?

I'm thinking of drilling out my pipe this weekend. I want a deeper, throatier rumble not a loud "ugly" sounding bike.
How can you explain your bike sound? lol
How big of a hole should I drill (if i do it)?
Will all the shavings go in the pipe and give me MORE annoying rattles?
Anyone custom make a plug to stuff it back shut if you want the stock sound again?

I just don't want it to be too loud where it annoys all the neighbors.

In my R/C hobby a company makes a pipe that is LOUD but its not good for the life of the engine and its SO loud its hurts your ears and makes you grit your teeth!

Be aware that if you drill it out that it will affect the air/fuel flow through the engine.
It will allow more air to flow so you may need to adjust the carb.

A 3/4" to 1" gives it a nice sound. But again it will likely affect how it runs.

Don't worry about the metal shavings.
Most of them are directed outside by the drill.
The rest will either blow out or just rust inside with the rest of the pipe.

Another thing to consider: do you live in a state where a spark arrestor is mandatory for riding off road?
I don't so it doesn't matter.

So I would need to adjust the carb to allow more fuel, correct. I've seen that on the Tech page - is it difficult to do - does it take long?

What about the sound?

The sound is good. Not too loud. It is a lttle deeper sound.
If you don't like it just have somebody weld back over the hole and paint it.
I had a Lifan GY5. I moved the carb clip one spot towards the pointy end.
It is posted on the site how to do that. Not too hard.
And you may need to adjust the fuel mixture screw out (counter-clockwise while looking at the head of the screw) a quarter to half turn.

You will know if it affected the mixture if you start feeling dead zones or the engine hiccuping at certain rpm's or throttle movements.

I probably wouldn't have done it if I had to remove the carb. I hate messing with carbs. Plus the gas smell goes right into my house from the garage. :(

There is the possibility that you would not need to do anything. I just wanted to give you a heads up if your bike starts running a little funny.

For the c-clip, just take off the seat and raise the bottom of the gas tank.
You can get to the top circular piece that unscrews then.

It seemed to calm down the middle vibrations a bit and be a little happier on the top end. But that was after minor adjustment to c-clip an carb.
It definitly sounded like it was faster.

BTW, I went the extra step and cut the end off the exhaust pipe with a band saw, then gutted the baffles, welded it back together like stock and repainted with high temp flat black. I like the sound and I don't think it's too loud. It still has every part of the end piece like stock so at least it has "one baffle" before the exhaust note escapes.

fatboy250 - that is a cool way to do it! I don't have welding tools so that was not an easy option for me.

I changed out the air filter for a UNI pod. You WILL have to mess with carb adjustments if you do that.
It would probably also benefit from a larger jet. I don't know how to do the jet.
Overall you will experience more power especially at higher rpm.

3/4" hole done. Sounds great! Sounds good at idle but it's not any louder while I was riding.
It's raining out so I just took it for a short spin around the neighborhood.
Doesn't seem like it's vibrating as horribly as it was but I haven't put back on my sideplates or skid plate yet either.

When I get it out and ride it more how will I know if its too lean? Sound like its starving?

Check your plug. Find a good long grade to pull at full throttle for 5 - 10 seconds. Immediately pull in the clutch, pull over and kill the motor. Don't let it idle at all. Pull the spark plug and check color of the insulator. It should be tan to brown, not gray or white. If it's white, you are too lean.

Here's how it sounds. It was a little big louder. I thought it sounded better than stock. I didnt touch the carb, and the bike still runs just fine.
