Mel, I noticed the same thing when riding a KLR650. The added weight of a full tank of fuel made it feel even heavier.

That was a tall bike too.

I don't doubt the KLR650 feels heavier with a full tank, Allen.

However, the Clarke fuel tank on my Zong is a complete asset, without any demerits. I always fill my Clarke tank to the top, even if I am tackling a nasty, steep, local trail. I honestly don't notice any difference in my bike's handling, whether the Clarke fuel tank is full, or almost on reserve.

Thats true spud... I wasnt thinking of the height difference between a my old lifanoid and the zong. Probably makes a signifcant difference. So it might be an issue for other bikes but because of the height difference... you are good to go

Yes, the height difference is a significant factor, Mel. However, WG also mentioned another important factor; the Clarke tank is very well designed to carry most of the fuel lower. In addition, the plastic, Clarke fuel tank weighs less than the stock, steel fuel tank.

When you put it that way, I am especially happy to be living in the great, free, western state of Idaho!

Alot of fuel tanks now are made of plastic, even cars and trucks. When gas got to 4 bucks a gallon a while back, there were numerous reports of people poking a hole in a plastic tank to steal the gas.

Even in the PRK I rode my XR250-L for 25,000 miles with a plastic Clarke tank with XR tank graphics and no one ever seemed to mind.

As W&G brought up, I think that plastic tanks aren't really CMVSS approved in Canada, though I am not 100% certain on this... I know my gy5 had a plastic tank, and was registered for the street but it was a RUM bike and I don't think I could register it for the street now if it wasn't done already. My gy6 had a metal tank, though it was still imported as a RUM bike.

Spud, that's a great addition, and it looks good. I know from a few road trips when you get into some of the wide open states or provinces spacing of gas stations can become an issue... I was on reserve for a fair while in Saskatchewan hoping a town would come up before I had to start pushing... My Kawasaki only gets about 225km before hitting reserve, your range is impressive

Thank you, Jim. With the improved range of my motorcycle, I can now explore trails I needed to neglect in the past. I would never again want a dual sport motorcycle with a range less than 200 miles. I can now travel 200 miles before I reach reserve, and my reserve range is a comforting 90 miles.
