Thanks guys, noob w/ a Lifan gy-5
Hi guys, thanks for all the info here. I'm a Jersey shore noob and brought home an 08 Lifan gy5 w/ 190 mi tonight. Asked the teen age owner if he had changed the oil yet, and he confidantly told me there is no oil...it's air cooled...hah. Checked the dip stick and it showed some oil, so I figured WTH in aint dead yet...maybe I got it just in time. The bike cold starts a little rough, the kid said he always plays w/ the idle adjustment during warm up. Apparently, he has been turning the idle up during warm up and then turning it down to ride??? Once warm the bike ran well so I gave him $800 and brought it home. Does this sound like a c-clip carb adjustment??
Drained the oil tonight, didn't look too bad, very slight amount of debris in the screen, but that is not a big surprise....right? Maybe a spark plug as well before I fool w/ the carb. Anyway, I likely be asking a few questions while I get this thing sorted. Thanks again, Mike |

Welcome Mike!
The dual sport guys will likely chime in soon, but it sounds like the typical restrictive intake and exhaust setup. If you address those items and re-jet, you'll likely have a decent performer.

Welcome to these forums, Mike. Depending on how long the bike has been sitting idle, the carburetor might need cleaning.
I moved your thread into the Dual Sport Forum so you can get more exposure, and more advice, for your questions. If you have time, please post some photos of your bike; we love photos! Spud

"It's air cooled it doesn't take oil" !!!
That's just plain awesome. I'll be laughing all the way to bed tonight.. Glad it's still runs and it's in someone's hands who knows it needs oil. I'm sure you'll have a good time with it. |

Lowering the c-clip will generally make cold starting easier. As the engine gets warmer the idle speed will increase. I set my idle with the engine warm and keep a fast idle with the throttle when cold. Spark plug change is a good idea. Some plugs on these bikes have actually been fake NGK's. With only 190 miles, the previous owner did not have time to screw up the oil. Sounds like your good to go.

You from Joisey? I'm from Joisey!
Grew up in Newark, spent my summers in Bradley Beach. When I went to medical school my mom moved to Pt. Pleasant. I kinda miss the Joisey Shore, but will never miss the Bennies on the Southbound GSP in bumper to bumper traffic all the way to exit 100.
