Help needed with LED taillight on Q

My LED tailight is dying, I assume from vibration and bouncing on the trails.

It started with about 15 bulbs, now only 3 work on the taillight, but all but one work with the brakelight.

Repalcement from Q is $80! 8O

Any ideas? Can individual LEDs be replaced? I'd like to gut it and install an 1157 or two.

You can buy individual LEDs, but you would need to solder them in.

radio shack has a larger assortment of led's ranging from very small to very large led's.. another option could to go to a auto parts store and buy a pair of led tail light bulbs and retro fit them into the tail light housing and also find a plug that matches them while you are there.. if you happen to have some old worn out trailor lights you could rob the bulb socket from them.. just need a step drill and some gasket maker...

back when i had my autocross ready integra i retro fitted some acura tsx hid headlights into the stock head light housings.

http://www.superbrightleds.com All you really need.

But if that ain't enough and you feel like fettling your own LEDs, www.dealextreme.com

BTW, don't waste your $ on the Radio Shack LEDs. You can get better quality and lower prices elsewhere.

You might also consider installing a DRC Edge 2 tail light, Doc. This tail light is reasonably priced, and very robust. I have been running my Edge 2 tail light for about 25,000 miles, and it is still in very good shape.

Forum member Homacide also installed an Edge 2 tail light on his Hondoid.

I wound up repalceing the LED bulb panel with an 1157 and an auto parts store socket for $3.

I don't think it's as good or as bright as the LEDs but I don't want to spend a lot of money on a bulb that will likely get ruined again fast.

I wrote Q Link to see if they can send me the LED bulb panel without the entire $80 light assembly.

An edge won't work for me because the stock lens is shaped to fit into the rear fender assembly and I think adding something would look bad in this case.

I'm good to go with the 1157, but I wish the running light was brighter. Since this bike sees hardly and road, and not at night, it's not too big a deal but I'm irritated.

So Spud, when you installed the Edge you deleted the entire bottom of the rear fender? What about dirt and mud?

It's kind of weird that it burned out that fast, usually LED's take vibes a lot better than incandescent bulbs do. That's one area where the Q's and Konkers differ a bit, the Konker uses the plain jane incandescent's instead of the LED's. FWIW I would have fixed it the same way. Hopefully Q will send you a new LED taillight assembly, you have two year warranty's on them in the States?

I doubt the warantee will cover light bulbs. They will probably exclude that.

I've been thinking of Spud's Edge idea. I will ahve to get him to send me measurements.

The rear end of my bike stays pretty clean, Doc. Occasionally I do get some mud on the license plate. At other times I will get a little mud on the mounting plate for my J.C. Whitney travel trunk. Removing the rear "mud flap" has eliminated a lot of weight, and vibration, from the rear end of my Zong. It is also easier to clean my bike, now that the rear mud flap is gone.

Check out the two threads I referred in my earlier post, Doc. The first thread also contains links to two vendors for the DRC Edge 2 tail light.
If you post some photos of your XP200's rear end, we should be able to determine if the Edge 2 tail light will fit your QLink bike.

I'm leaning towards the dge then Spud, unless Q can do right by me. When you get a chance please let me know its dimentions.

I may also just go with my 1157 conversion until it fails too. I just wish it was brighter. I'm PARANOID abotu good taillights for obvious reasons. I know I don't ride it on the street much or at night much, and I do have the Dork Vest but I'm paranoid. Is the Edge bright? How's it holding up? How much and where did you get it from? Easy install?
