Lifan GY-5 Major Engine Malfunction w/ pics (grenade)

I was only 100 yards out the driveway in 2nd gear, maybe 15 mph, loud clank, rear tire locks up and I know it doesnt seem like a minor problem. Kickstart will not turn the engine. I think I am the proud owner of a Lifan paperweight. I am upset....i loved this little bike and thought a lot of it. Perhaps that waterhole I hit last winter filled her belly w/ bad stuff?

If anyone has any suggestions on the best course from here I would greatly appreciate it. Anyone have a balance shaft lifan 200cc? This is a 2008 I believe.

Oh, the engine case is also busted to the rear of the cylinder head just below the starter. Is this a wrist pin failure and the connecting rod slapped the engine case?

Thank you!

Mike

www.hooperimports.com. You may also get lucky on eBay.

I've not seen a puked Lifan before either. It is likely it was damaged in your water hole incident, IIRC.

You need a new motor. That ones not salvageable.

Not a bad deal for a brand new engine IMHO

Yeah, JB weld can't fix this one. The horsepower will leak out.

Pete,

The "water hole incident" occured last winter when I drowned the poor bike in a large puddle. The engine oil became contaminated, I changed it as soon as I could....

I posted in the wanted section as well, but if anyone has a decent condition replacement motor please let me know.

Thanks, Mike

I have seen non runner 200cc china bikes on craiglist for less than $300. Usually something simple like a cdi or carb problem.

You can buy the whole bike and swap the engine into your lifan. Then part the rest out.

Or keep the rest of the donor bike for parts.

Bang slam...connecting rod no longer connected! Pretty simple to drop the engine...next time remind me to disconnect the choke cable...haha

Ouch! She cratered in a big way! At least you now know that it had nothing to do with drowning it in the water hole... That wouldn't cause a rod to break in half. I'm guessing a flaw in the rod casting?

Could still be water damaged combined with porosity. Water is the enemy of bearings, and it could be that the big end bearing refused to turn, which placed the load on the rod. Who knows.
