battery for e-starter?
what kind of battery is best for an electric starter motor on a 230? the crf 230 service manual lists a 4 Ah battery. any experience and views?

yes, humanbeing, i have to get one of those!
the zong has a 7 AH, the suzuki a 7.5. the 4,5 of the crf 230 may be a little on the weak side? what about wires? would 2 mm wires be ok for 7 Ah?

humanbeing, yes, for the starter motor i have a thick cable.
but with a strong battery will 2mm be okay for other electric cable on motorcycle? if draw is less than power it should be okay or am i wrong? i don t know. :? this one looks good: http://www.exideuk.com/gel12-19-85-p.asp

Personally, I would install at least a 7 amp-hour battery.

I would install the largest cable from the battery to the solenoid, from the solenoid to the starter and from the ground terminal to the frame that I could manage.

thank you for your tips, gentlemen!
this looks like a good battery and i won t have to worry about a larger battery case: http://www.motorcycleaccessoriesaust...ic-4-cell-evo2 weldangrind, u say the negative terminal should run to a ground like on a car? that makes perfect sense. but i thought on a mc it does that via wire harness and regulator? or does it need a balance for the thick red cable to solenoid and starter?

If you want to install a lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery, I suggest you get either an Antigravity battery, or a Shorai battery. Both of these batteries will crank harder, and last longer than an Evo battery.

If size is an issue, I recommend the 4 Cell battery. http://antigravitybatteries.com/ag-401/ If you can't get them to ship to Australia, I then recommend the Shorai LFX09A2 battery, which I have installed in my Honda XR650L. http://shoraipower.com.au/store/products/lfx09a2-bs12/ This battery has performed flawlessly for me for over 30,000 miles. ![]() Spud ![]()

I use the same ballistic battery in my bike and you can't kill 'em. I know I have tried several times accidently on purpose.

thanks again, will implement soon and report back. two more things:
a) will the old regulator from 1980 6V 185cc be good enough for 12 V 230cc power? i guess i ll have to start her up and measure? b) would it be correct to put a 10 amp fuse in the normal circuit and none for the cables which go to the starter motor? or should i go to 20 amps? should the solenoid switch (as opposed to the starter cable) get its own fuse?

You can fuse whichever circuits you wish, but typical China bikes have only one fuse, which is only a few inches from the positive terminal of the battery. I think the standard fuse is 15A.
I would use a regulator that is designed for a China bike. They're cheap as chips, and you can sell the Honda part on eBay.

spudrider, there seems to be an importer for antigravity batteries in australia, so i should be able to get one here.
weldangrind and humanbeing, it s a 230 zongshen, so pretty much a crf copy. meanwhile i found out that the xl185 regulator operates between 7 and 9 volts, which isn t enough of course. so i better get a higher capacity regulator before i hook everything up. :-)
