Thumbs Up Hey csc sixshooter Joe Beck-

I just SAW Joe Beck's bLOG on the Csc site bout shooting his new Uberti 45. Gotta second the thumbs up on these Italian firearms masters. Quality is incredibly good, (certain US mfg's please take note!)

Some years ago, I came into possession of one of their Black Powder replica rifles, a muzzeloader Hawkins type copied EXACTLY (micrometers, metallurgy, the whole nine yards) from Kit Carson's personal rifle which used to, and maybe still resides in, a museum I think in Taos, New Mexico.

granted I was not an entirely helpless shooter, having just finished my tour w the spcl warfare unit of the 18th Abn Corps ( loooong ago you guys), but I got invited to a Black powder shoot at the old L A county firing range.

Bottom line, took about an hour to find the right handload combination, (powder, grade, grains, primer, and "tampimg' technique. I shot five rounds through fixed open Buckeye sights at 100 yards, result?

All in the same hole, what we used to call a "Mickey Mouse"pattern. Rifle was {still is a 53 caliber, shooting hand cast .53 round balls, cloth patched. diameter of group (outside edge to edge ) was about .62- a center ball sized hole with two ear like bumps at 10 and 2 oclock. (ergo "Micky Mouse")

Now That was literally decades ago, but i still remember the spotter calling for the range to close down so the rangemaster and other Judges could walk out personally to inspect the target before anyone could fool with it.

Stii have that rifle and target signed by the rangemaster and officials, packed away in a trunk for safe keeping.

Whomever built Kit's rifle, and the Umberti engineers who copied it, sure knew what they were doing. At least now I know how Carson made some of those amazing shots the historians keep trying to discredit.
