A friendly reminder.

This is mainly aimed at those new to bikes or carbureted vehicles, so take it as such.

If you are a more hardcore rider like me, and you find yourself riding well into fall and even winter, then it is starting to get cold enough to consider bumping up half a step or full step in at least the main jet. Especially if you tuned your carb in the summer heat. I had to step my main jet up to a 120 and give my idle mix a quarter turn out to run properly this week with the temps dipping into the 50 and below range.

The basic rule of thumb for the mikuni carbs is a half step for a 25 degree change in average temp.

That's boring though. Who wants to just start and ride a bike when they can constantly fiddle with the fueling.

I can do that on my carb bikes. No need for fiddling with them. Even going into the mountains they run great. I do clean them out and tune them up every couple years.

There are numerous posts and websites that do a better job of explaining this than I have the time to type right now. They key is understanding what throttle positions and circuits are affected by which jet. After that it is a matter of plug chopping and/or using your ears and the feel of the way the bike behaves to figure out which jet may be the culprit. Also keeping in mind that every jet still has a small effect on other throttle poaitions is a good one as well, I.E. a larger main jet will very alightly affect the pilot jet mixture for light throttle, and have more effect on the needle mixture.

Since this community has covered jetting so much, it shouldnt be hard to get a pretty close setup figured out.

Same here. I purposely jetted my bike a bit too rich in the 90 degree heat so it wouldnt be too lean at 50 to 60 degrees, but at 40 degrees it was starting to show all the signs of leaning out. Higher than normal idle after warming up, hesitation when rolling on throttle, and a weaker top end pull. Going from a 117.5 to 120 main jet and tweaking my idle mixture just a hair richer solved my problems.

turn the air screw till you get the highest idle revs then back it in
1/8 of a turn.... then reset the idle...

this only works right if the bike is jetted correctly to start with..

2014 Honda CB500X. It's the first and only FI I bike I own. The other seven are multiple carbs per bike.

In it's current configuration. That will change slightly over the winter.
