My plans

So I have a set of Shinko 705s I am going to put on, got the new tubes and rim strips. While I have it apart I ordered a rear sprocket (43 as that is recommended by megadan. already have a 17 front)

Should I go ahead and change the chain? Mine is in good condition but I have read it is muff cabbage. Is there a chain I can put on with these sprockets that i will not have to remove links? To o-ring or not to o-ring, that is the question.....

Have I missed anything? What else? Frequently encountered problems I may come across?

Want to thank you guys, I have never really worked on a motorcycle and was oblivious but managed to tune my carb, airbox mod, change the front sprocket, install the ebay exhaust and more with the combined brain trust of this forum and it's fine folk. (All this with my IQ being just above that of an average chimp. Chimps might be smarter but they cant "read real good like yours truly")

So, THANKS GUYS! and gals? Are there lady hawk riders?

The stock chain is fine as long as it was well lubricated before you started riding. There like the rest of the bike. Lack of lubricant. I soaked mine in synthetic gear oil while I was assembling the bike. I put about 2800 miles on it before I changed it. It was still within spec but changed it anyway. I put the same stock Hawk chain back on it that another member had donated to me. Did the same thing. Soaked it in gear oil.

Now the question Oring or non oring chain. If you do mostly street riding you could stick with a non oring chain. If you plan on off road and driving it through water, sand and so on I would go with the oring chain.

128 link chain should be the perfect length if you can find one. If not it's not hard to remove the links.

I rode on dirt for many years, and have never had an o-ring chain. We cooked our cleaned chains in Gulf canning wax mixed with graphite. I did this twice a year because where I lived back then had a 12 month riding season...ARH...

I only use O-ring chains..Why?.. my chains are bone dry in 30mins or less... with the O-ring chain they retain the lube in the rollers ...
