Hawk 250 with nighthawk 250 engine?

Can you put a dual cylinder nighthawk 250 engine on a hawk 250?

Dimensionally speaking it would likely fit. Two of the motor mount points would probably even line up.

Possible fitment issue would be at the front of the motor where the starter is located. Obviously the other mount points would require a little fabrication.

The real question is, is it worth it? 5 more cc's than a Hawk engine, and the Nighthawk engine only makes 19.3hp, which really isn't much of an increase over a well tuned CG250.

If I were going to swap in a genuine Honda engine, I would probably swing for an XR250 engine. Still only 20hp stock, but they can be really opened up if you are after more power.

Bolt right up? no. But at most it would require making new front motor mount brackets and maybe upper mount brackets. It's mounting style is most more similar to the stock Hawk engine than the Nighthawk engine.

I'm only guessing that the countershaft sprocket on the Nighthawk motor wouldn't line up with the rear sprocket. That could be overcome, but I agree with Dan that a single would be better. If you're looking for torque, an XR400 motor fits in the same space as an XR250 motor. In either case (if you're talking about '96-up), you'll need an oil cooler, tank and dipstick, since these are dry-sump engines.

The countershaft sprocket alignment on the Nighthawk engine actually wouldn't be as big of a problem as you think. They are ridiculously inboard on those engines. It might not be perfect, but I would almost bet it would be close.

The XR400 oil cooler is a wonderful piece. It mounts around the neck of the frame right at the front. The oil tank would be the tricky part since the frames served as the oil tank on the XR. The area under the seat where the factory air box is located would be the best place for an oil tank on a Hawk. Obviously you would have to fab something up, but it would be doable. Either that, or the area right behind the cylinder where the starter used to be on the Hawk, since most XR engines are kick start, with exception to the L models.

You can't tell I put in a lot of thought into this idea have you? lol

Both the Nighthawk and the XR engine would require the engine be offset to the right to line up the output sprocket to the wheel. The Nighthawk engine would stick way out there.

Having a Nighthawk 250, I would say it won't be worth it. If/when you manage to jerry rig it to the bike, there will still be a lot of obstacles to deal with, like the fact that the sprocket might not line up, (stock the sprocket for the nighthawk is a 14 tooth one, and biggest it'll take is a 15 tooth). Then there's the exhaust that now has to have two exhausts. Probably going to want to custom make one or order one because the stock one for the nighthawk goes under the bike, so if you do any off-roading it's the first thing to hit anything, and making installing any type of skid plate a custom and difficult job.

If you manage to do it, I would love to see pics or a video, though!
