07 Shineray exhaust mod and a carb question. With pics.

Hello everybody,

Gonna remove this exhaust and cut it open to see what there is in there to see and maybe remove a thing or two. :twisted: I have ordered a UNI pod filter and have removed the useless airbox and burned it! I need to know if I just rejet can I leave the needle where it is? I got my gruby hands on a set of jets, 100, 105, 110 and 115 for a buck a piece. Moving the needle requires removing the carb because it hits the top of the frame. PITA!! ANy help would be great!

Thanks, Wolf

Driller,

It's not that I can't pull the carb, its sitting on the work bench now, the question is can I just leave the needle where it is and rejet and call it good?

After I put the free flowing exhaust and a 115 jet on mine I had to readjust the carb(fuel mixture screw & needle) to get it to run right again and I suspect you'll have to retune yours as well.

You could just put the clip right in the middle notch and go from there.

It all depends.

Sometimes it will work and sometimes it won't.

Carbs are magical creatures. What works for someone may not work at all for someone else with the exact same machine.

Example...my race 250 uses different main jets and different needle positions than another guy who lives about 5 miles from me. We have the same model Ninja 250 from the same year with about the same miles. We have the same pod filters and same exhaust.

Allrighty folks, here goes my exhaust mod.

Here's the pipe unmolested

This WAS gonna be my implement of desruction;

But I found that sucked, this was way better!!

Damn that was quick,

Don't see any packing in there,

I think this was the Chinese idea of a spark arrester, not much it was gonna do to stop sparks though;

Let's try the other end, hmmmm, no packing at all;

Reaming out the butt end of the pipe;

Butt reamed;

Butt reamed some more, hehehehe;

Hammered out the rest of the inlet pipe;

Went ahead and cut out the rest of it with the plasma, just because I can!! BWAAHAHAHAHA

Drilled another hole in the center of the pipe just because I already had the bit in the drill press;

Cleaned up and ready to weld back together but as you can see from the picture my glass is EMPTY, EMPTY I SAY, be back at it after a refill;

All welded and repainted, can't tell anything was done to it.

Don't ask for close ups of the welds, ever try welding two tin cans together? Me either until now. I didn't remove much and would have been just as effective if I just drilled a 3/4 inch hole right through the back end I think. I am happy to see what was inside though, my main concern with just drilling holes into the muffler was the shavings that would have been left behind. Hope this helps anyone who wants to mod their exhaust this way. As far as the back pressure issue, I am not to concerned, I left enough of a baffle in the pipe to still create some back pressure. There wasn't really that much restriction there to begin with so I am curious to see what if any gain I get. Gonna be a few days until I get the filter and start the tuinng.

Did you have to change out the needle after installing your exhaust mod?

Undertow,

Don't know just yet, still waiting for some parts so I can put it all back together and start the tuning. There will be a thread on that I am sure!

Actually this mod is an oldy but a goody.
There are several different types of exhausts out there so it is nice see all the different styles being modded.

You DO NOT need backpressure that is a common myth. You can research it yourself on the net or look here, this is the first site I pulled up on it from google.

My exhaust is just an open pipe basically.I could see right thru the muffler so I'd say mine has no real back pressure (from where, the little sparky screen)

I love 4-strokes because the exhaust doesnt have to be just perfect like a 2-stroke needs it to be for optimum performance.

My bike runs EXCELLENT like that and has gained a very very noticable amount of power on the low end where I really needed it to be, it is now able to easily pull up out of all the deep sand we were riding in.
