14v small bulb in 12v socket

Silly question..

My TBR7 is up for inspection this month and I am fairly friendly with the local mechanic.

My small running light (not headlight) has burned out - it is a T4W 12v 4 watt bulb which is nearly impossible to locate locally - need to purchase from EBY or AMZ , which I do not feel like waiting 2 weeks to ship a small bulb.

I purchased a small bulb from local auto shop, Sylvania 1891 same size and perfect fit, however it is a 14v 3.4 watt bulb.

Local mechanic said that ALL bulbs must function to pass the inspection.

Any harm is running a small 14v 3.4 watt in a 12v socket?

None what so ever. It's a curly piece of tungsten wire. Probs won't burn quite as bright as the original. Then again your charging circuit is already pushing out around 14v so might even be unnoticable. Curious part is I've never come across a 14v bulb.

T4W is also known as BA9s if that helps.

Thanks all!

Really helpful details Matt - Googling BA9s opens up quite few LED options on Amazon with the correct base and reasonable pricing.

@Jerry - different base than the bulbs you showed.

See attached

Just use what you found... It may not be quite the same brightness but it will illuminate and allow you to pass the bulb inspection.

Those 1891 bulbs look like the crappy bulbs used as headlights on my kids New Cheetah atv.. Useless as lights, but functional I suppose.

I was going to say, just use any old BA9 bulb. They are pretty universal. Like Jerry, I just put a little LED one in mine after the original one fizzled. You can buy them in multipacks for a few bucks. I have like 8 of them left from doing the instrument lights on my Goldwing.

Assume you just rewired a new base on to fit the LED minis?

Thanks

No, the minis are built for the base. You just need to find the right base/bulb combo
