Carb upgrade/mod advice
Once again I have tried to do due diligence with searching, but in this case I really need advice as to the direction to take.
I recently posted as to a good bike for my boys to get, and they have 'got' Hawk 250 Advice for 15 yr old In addition my 17 year old purchased an X-Pro Hawk 250. The carbs across all of the bikes are all Sheng Wey PZ30s. They enjoy riding the bikes as is - meaning that they are not out to hot rod these things. They just want good idle and smooth running. They have good riding places real close to us and can trailer to any other places. We live in Florida at 0' altitude, and on rainy days I think it is lower. Would it be best for them to mod the current carb (ala Motocheez), purchase a new clone on Amazon VM26 30mm Carb or tell them to save their money for a Nibbi PE30 like found in thread Best size Carb for Hawk 250. They are not rich by any means, but I don't mind telling them to work for the good stuff. Once again thanks to everyone. |

I don't know what jets to get for the stock carb, but if I was to deal with a carb again, I'd rather drill the idle mixture plug and bowl screws out of the stock carb and replace the screws with some at the hardware store.

My personal preference for everyday riding would be the pz30b pumper carb

I just went thru the exercise of tuning the stock PZ30 on my stock Titan DLX.. The best setting for me wound up being:
40 pilot (mine is 37 currently wit a/f turned out since i didnt have a Mikuni pilot jet on hand) 115 main Needle shimmed with 2 washers Ofcourse this will depend on your elevation. Im in VA at 700'

Don't do the PE30 without other big engine work. It will be a finicky pain in the butt.
The vm26 clone is nice because it uses mikuni jets and it is super easy to dial in. For any real improvement in performance, the pz30b is the best option. Doesn't add any extra power, but the accelerator pump puts a bit more pep in its step with aggressive throttle roll on, making the bike feel stronger and more responsive. - A person who has more carbs than bikes.

SSR uses a 26mm Mikuni (or clone perhaps) on its 250cc dual sport.
Here is a good video on tuning carbs.

Thanks everyone! This is a great start!
I have been letting the boys make their own decisions figuring that they will learn a lot more than if I give them a set path. So far they are loving the bikes - as I anticipated that they would. |
