Templar X first mod 14T Sprocket

First mod is done.

Such a small change made a noticeable difference. A die grinder was my friend. Had to clearance the area just a touch but on it went.

There is actually a bit of a first gear now.

Now for a 42 rear.

I can get one when I get home.

It took just a couple minutes to clear the small amount of material necessary to allow the clearance for the chain.

If you are having to grind material to fit the chain, I would keep a close eye on maintaining chain slack. With close clearance, there's always a good chance of the chain jumping a teeth and busting the case. Personally I would go back to the 13 tooth and drop three more teeth on the rear sprocket.

Several of us have done or are doing just that. Nutcracker dropped from 49 all the way to 38, but settled at 42. I’ve got a 40 tooth in the mail.

I just measured the shaft. It is a 20mm shaft and the 4mm spline width matches. And I get 18 on the spline recess. Specs match, but what about the offset, is there a wide shaft mount?
OP ...wojo, does your new sprocket have a widened shaft mount, or just 520 chain width???

I was looking at a JTF337 but it is for a larger (22mm) driveshaft.

Real measurements

I pulled the sprocket and it does have the widened shaft contact. It is 8.5mm wide, with spline dimensions otherwise exactly like the JTF 328 (Megadan has on his Hawk). Here are the dimensions:

This is a YOXI sprocket. I google and get Alibaba links.

Here is the evidence. Does JT have this sprocket?

Found this on ebay:
Specifications
Size: 530-14T
Mounting Hole PCD: 35mm
Bolt Hole Diameter: 5.5mm
Spline Diameter: 22mm
Spline Quantity: 6
Spline Width: 4.2mm

But these numbers don't match what I have on OEM sprocket! And I think the widened shaft contact surface holds the sprocket away from the engine, probably aligning with the rear sprocket better. Without that extra width, the sprocket will float on the shaft too.

ebay with description...
Front Sprocket 530-14T 172FMM (SPKF017) for Zongshen Storm 250 ZS250GS (#017)

But I also found (Thumpertalk) that grinding is required for a 14T sprocket. Without the widened shaft mount, the sprocket can migrate into the engine where it may grind with the case.

If I need to gear up, I will just drop teeth on the rear sprocket.

Wojo...... Where did you get your 14T sprocket? Part # ?

Just swapped the rear sprocket to a JT JTR210.42, used a new chain RK Racing Chain 520-SO-112 (520 Series) Steel.

The sprocket didn’t fit without some slight opening of the countersunk holes. At first glance it almost looks like the original sprocket countersunk mounting holes were drilled thru the hub at the same time. Finally got it on and I can tell you the rear sprocket bolts are robust and heavily coated in thread lock.

Had to drop a link out of the 112, and it’s farther back, middle of third divot from front.

Still breaking in the chain, but I can cruise 55-60 semi-comfortably. It really didn’t lose to much bottom either; pulling the back yard hill in 2nd and now damaging the grass…

Thumper, I remember seeing you wanting to remove the shim from the needle, I went 125/45 and didn’t touch the needle, fueling still seems really good.

I haven't really decided when or whether to gear it up. The original 13T x 49T is really low geared (0.265!), but it is a true enduro bike.

This OEM gearing gives you a crawling 1st for tight situations, and brings 2nd and even 3rd gear into useful range for trail riding.

Dropping to 42T brings it into lower gear end of dual purpose range with a ratio of 0.31 That is more than a 16% change! No more super-crawling 1st gear, but you stand a chance in traffic. Still it is lower geared than most of the standard Chinese dual sports.

My Storm came with OEM gearing of 17T/42T =0.3696 final drive ratio
I made a modest reduction for better off-road performance:
New gearing is 12T/35T =0.3429 final drive ratio

This brings it more into perspective for me. The 42T rear sprocket you installed is still lower geared than my Storm. Based on this, I think the 42T rear sprocket would be a usable upgrade for my Temp X. Thanks for the part number!

I am definitely not going to go 14T on the front. There is plenty of room for dropping on the rear, and I am not going to grind the engine case. No need to go 14T for my purposes. It is a dirt bike, and I ride it off road!

BTW, the JTF287 has a spline recess measurement of 18mm (post #9 above). The JT287 will be loose on this shaft. Still no ideal front sprocket replacement that I've seen. Not even a OEM 13T. But it is probably available on Alibaba/AliExpress.

I plan to either add the 14-Tooth Front, or drop down to a 38 tooth rear, the 13/42 combo is still too low for the commuter/ dual Sport range I'm looking for...my old Yamaha XT250 only had 17hp, and could easily reach 70mph, and 55 was easy on the motor...looking for similar on my Templar X......thanks for locating the 270 front sprocket....now to decide which way I want to go....I like a bigger front, as it helps with the wear, but not excited about grinding on the case....
