The heat must be getting to me!
Just ordered a new AL GY5 from MOTO Extreme. Last bike I owned was an early 70's Honda CT90 that I bought new from the dealer. We stuck that little workhorse on the front of the truck and took it everywhere with us, hunting, camping, to the beach in Mexico, you name it..
Before that it was a 1965 BSA 650 Spitfire Scrambler that I loved and ended up losing. A guy made a quick left hand turn in front of me into a drive-in movie theater one night and I T-boned him - totaling the bike and nearly totaling myself in the process. I remember reading the marquee at the drive-in movie as I rode by: "James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor in GIANT". Then I remember waking up in the hospital.. With today's gas prices through the roof I figured it was time to put all that behind me and get a new AL GY5. I've spent the past weeks educating myself about China bikes, and find China Riders to be the best source for that by far. As soon as the bike arrives I'll prep it - doing all the little things that will insure it serves me well. Most of my riding will be local since what work I still do is from my home office. Having the bike will mean I can run around off peak traffic hours for pennies on the dollar compared to driving my 4x4 Tacoma. When we do get away from the desert heat to the cool of the north country I'll enjoying trailing through back country for miles on end with a light footprint - almost like the old Honda Trail 90 used to do. That will be a lot of fun! Anyway, ..glad to be part of the China Riders group now, and I'm looking forward to the weeks and months ahead as I get to know my new GY5. |

Hello Taco,
Wasn't those little Honda CT bikes great? I have a 1969 CT90 I hope to restore one day. Will probably put a Lifan engine in it. |

When I said I had a CT90 from the early 70's I must've been punch drunk from the long day I'd just put in! My CT90 was actually from the mid 60's and not the early 70's. A great little bike that did nothing but run without ever a problem! Following the CT90, I traded it in to the Honda dealer in the early 70's and picked up a new Honda 125 Trials Bike to use as a go anywhere machine. I was really pleased with it, and there was almost nowhere it wouldn't take me, but it did not have the versatility of the CT90 in that it wasn't street legal. I finally sold the 125 Trials bike and moved on into a Honda 3 wheeler when those became the way to go off road. Also, one other correction, my BSA 650 Spitfire Scrambler was a '57, ..not a '65 like I first posted (have to blame it on just being dog tired when I started this thread!). I got that rocket of a bike from the BSA dealer in Phoenix, a machine he had set up to ride himself. It set me back $700 (in 1950's dollars, not today's dollars!), and I was a 50's motorcycle punk for a time, ..right up until the evening the guy turned in front of me at the drive-in theater - and my punk riding days suddenly ended! |

Now that's understandible. 8O My current ride is a 1972 cb350, and I understand the pull towards older bikes. Thanks for making corrections to your earlier post. It shows you're human. Check out the bike prep thread and do as much as you can before you ride and as the bike gets broken in. The prep really does help. Enjoy!
