Halogen running lamps upgrade

This is a test fit of a $19.00, 55watt halogen driving light set I am considering for the GY-5.

Notice that I had to relocate the choke. 8O

I still need to do some more research as far as how to wire it and it's affect on the stator/rectifier load.

Does it look like REDCHINAREDNECKHILLBILLY :?: :?: :?:

Just checkin,
Tigertamer

As much as the extra light is needed, the stator on your bike will not run those lights .

At the risk of being laughed off the sight, I beg to differ!

The stator does in fact "run the lights"!

I've already been put in check for not agreeing with you before, and I know that you are very knowledgable when it comes to motorcycles.

I like to push the envelope, if you will, and I am not affraid to experiment. I do however research first...hence my post...and I do agree with you to a point. I agree there will be an extra load in the cicuit while using these lamps. I do not agree with the statement that the stator will not "run" the lamps.

I don't mean to offend anybody here, I just try to help when need and help others when I can 8O

I don't use the high beams that often, but when I do, It's because I need extra illumination.

And I understand that it will tax the stator. It really depends on the duty-cycle. I can easilly wire a switch in the circuit to have the running lamps only available during high beam operation and and only if I toggle a separate switch. that way the normal operation of the high beams is unaffected by the switched-off running lights.

When needed I can switch the extra lamps to get out of danger at night. I do not intend for these extra lights to be used for boulevard cruising, as I stated it's just for short duty cycles and not for constant use.

Respectfully,
Tigertamer

Just to reiterate I have no intention of mis-behavior here, I am just being objective.

And red2003, I was going to PM you to let you know that I respect your advice, but though it better to do it here so all wil see! 8O

So, back to the drawing board for me,
Tigertamer

Just trying to help you out. No need to get defensive. You are the one that said you needed to do more homework. Here's some important info. The stators on these bikes only put out about 90 watts total. Two 55 watt lights maxes out the stator before anything else even gets fed, like the CDI and the headlight. If you like to experiment, then by all means do, I just wanted you to be informed before you fry your bikes electronics.

(In a non-antagonistic and totally friendly manner he said)

Red2003, where do you get that 90w number from? I'm not trying to pick a fight, I'm just curious. Everybody has a different number they say the bike puts out.....mebigdave says he has a huge headlight bulb, something over 100w I think. I have a 45w halogen in mine and SO FAR I have not burned anything out, despite warnings to that effect (although it may catch up with me).....I'm curious as to how much power these bikes really put out!

I put those same (or similar) lights on mine. I was excited about my new lights! Started it up and nothing. So I thought I would run lo like normal and then when I hit hi just the driving lights would shine. Started it up and hooked up one and it worked, touched the 2nd wire and they still worked but got very dim. Scratched that idea. Maybe it'll work out for you though. Good luck.

Different china bikes may have different stators.I tried a 55 watt halogen bulb in place of the headlight on my Lifan and had no problems with it suppling enough power even at idle on high beam.Removed it because the bulb i tried went too far past the reflecter and projected a big black spot in the pattern.Going to try a different style halogen bulb thaqt will not go so far in.

Thanks, everyone for not flaming me

Thanks Red, for being patient with me. Sorry if I sounded defensive.

When I test fitted the lamps I drew direct from the battery (15a fuse of course) and I could not look directly into the beams...too bright. This was at idle, with the stock headlamp lit as well.

So, the lights work.
The lights increase the load on the stator.
The lights will only be used sparingly.

So I feel confident in pursuing this experiment with caution.

NOTE: I did not suggest any new member do this to his bike. This works for me. As a side note, I have LEDs all around and this may be why I am having success so far

I love this place,
Tigertamer

It couldn't be my mod, because my bike is not smoldering!

Are you talking about the LEDs I oulined for Glenski? I don't recall telling you to do anything to your bike.

Caveat emptor,
Tigertamer

P.S. I'm not biting 8O

I use Imageshack: http://imageshack.us/ Copy the first link for forums, then paste it to your post. Then you can preview the post before you submit, to be sure everything looks alright.

There are others. When you use the free version of these hosts, they throw in stupid adds at the bottom of the pic sometimes. The images are excellent quality though. It really depend on your camera and shoooting skills!
Thanks.

See ya,
