Mystery Solved - Back On The Road

I have been fiddling with my carburetor for about three weeks and the motor breaks up around 4,000 rpm. I finally got it to the point where it at least was drivable, but it still ran a little rough. In the meantime while I was working on the carb, the exhaust baffle, which I had welded once before broke again.
So, today I thought I'd go get the baffle welded again and see if that improved the performance any.

Before the guy welded it, he said I should take the seat and side panels off so he could disconnect the ignition wires before he welded, as a precaution. I thought he was nuts, but I did it anyway, and he found a loose wire in one of the plugs. I had only just checked the plugs themselves, not the individual wires.

Now, with the exhaust baffle welded and the wire reconnected, the bike runs like a top, so I'm back in business!

Thanks to everybody for all advice given; I really appreciate it!!

Will do! (And add a filter).

And, I promise never to fiddle with something ever again that doesn't need to be fixed.

Cudos to a welder that actually has an understanding of welding. He wanted to unhook the ignition because he was about to send 20-30volts @ 150-200amps through your electrical system. (I've been a welder all of my adult life).

Sweet deal. BUT, feel free to tinker on that thing. Look at all the info you have picked up now. And, best of all, the next time a guy comes on here with those symptoms you can help him out and get him back on the road ASAP. Congrats man!!!

Yes, Kudos to you too, DDG1976, your persistence paid off and although the cure came by accident, the reason it was uncovered was "all you" and your not throwing in the towel and cussing us as we help..unlike the "many incarnations" of a certain Mr. andzman

I'm sure I will continue to tinker. And anyway, I can serve as a bad example!

Better a success story than a bad example. bad example would be throwing the towel in and saying your 70 mpg transportation was chinese crap.
