Starting problem 200 GY 5 <Pics on page 2>
I think this is only my second or third post here but so far you guys have been amazing. After I took everyones suggestions about my earlier issues the bike has been SO much fun to ride. It's sturdy, its getting faster EVERY time I ride it and its really a great bike for the price. I am 100% happy with the purchase (even if it breaks tomorrow!)
I have one last issue which will put to bed my "new bike" problems. I did the c-clip mod (and now the bike idles much better). but the bike will still not start right away. Infact, I have to turn the idle screw a good amount in (making the "idle" higher) just to get the bike to start. When it does, the idle stays nice and low until it warms up. Once it warms up I constantly have to stop and pull the idle back. when its at full operating temp I am atleast three full turns away from where I started off. Once its warmed up fully and the idle is set properly (1500rpm) the bike will start VERY easily and goes right into a very nice idle. If it cools off, i have to turn the idle screw back in. If it's completely cold I have to go back to position 1 on the idle screw (3 turns back in) and repeat the process of backing the idle screw out as the bike gets warmer. This can't be how they intended the bike to run can it? The Idle screw works much better then the choke (which seems to have absolutely no effect on starting the bike when cold or warm. it just slows idle and kills th engine..any thoughts here?) |

Did you try various C-Clip settings? Perhaps you raised (lowered?) it too much.
I know had to adjust mine several times to get the correct setting.

Sounds like you moved the clip toward the big end instead of the pointy end? Just what it sounds like to me.

I had the same problem on my son's Yamaha PW50 and I just had to keep adjusting the c-clip until everything performed the way it's suppose to. The only other thing I would check is your throttle cable, and choke cable. Make sure they are actually working at the carb. Also make sure the steering is not binding the cables in a way that would cause them not work properly. I'm just throwing things out there, so good luck.

I moved the c-clip all the way to the pointy end. It came in the middle. I have ONE slot between where it came from and where I put it now. is that little space going to make such a big diff?
Also, I assume since I need to "higher" the idle to get the bike to start that moving the c-clip back one notch isnt going to help but its going to put me one step back from where I am now now? |

My bike does this stock without mods. I think its normal. The owners manual even says something about adjusting the idle to get it to start.

Yea, one notch will make a big difference. As Ironfist said the elevation has a big impact as well.

If you're above 6000ft you'll probably need to rejet. One notch can make a big difference.

Guys, I'm pretty much at sea level. I live on Long Island, in NY. Temps right now are 35 - 55 degrees. I tried starting in both 40 degree and 50 degree weather. does the same thing.
Moving the cClip one notch towards the fat end is not going to help because if screwing IN the idle screw makes the bike start, then INCREASING gas flow (for starting) is my solution. Moving the C clip back one notch towards the fat end will do the opposite, it will seat the needle further down CLOSING off gas flow more then it is. I almost feel as if I need a shorter needle, one that has more notches so I can keep moving the c clip towards the narrow end. |

I am about 1100ft and I found that my bike worked pretty good on the second notch from the pointed end when stock.
At near sea level you are going to need more fuel yet. So if you have the clip to the closest to the pointed end and you still need more you are going to have to rejet the carb. I think stock is a 98 main jet so you may want to try something slightly larger. I have a 108 with the UNI filter and opened up exhaust and I am slightly lean yet. A 105 may be about right for your bike. Allen

As it gets colder out you might find re-jetting will help for that too. :wink:
