JB Weld v. Silver Solder

My clutch cable broke at the lever. I will try to fix it. I heard silver solder is really strong, and I have some and a solder iron. Should I use JB Weld or silver solder?

I'd have to go with a new clutch cable, unless you just can't find one.

Drill out old cable from tit.
Insert clean cut end of cable ...fill with silver solder...readjust cable at clutch end...

The bike only has 5000 chino-miles when the cable broke today. I think I want to fix it right or replace it with higher quality cable, not another chino cable.

Too bad that the tit fell out, and I can't find it. I plan to make a tit out of a bolt.

Chino?

Cables break, it isn't limited to China bikes only.

Here is the cable after making a new nipple and soldering it onto the cable with silver solder. I pray to Lord that it holds, as this bike is my only mode of transportation.

Chino is Spanish slang for Chinese.

The correct way to solder a cable terminal is to put the cable through, bend the ends of the individual wires outward like flower petals, then solder. Regular 60/40 solder works fine.

Q, I wish I had read your reply before I soldered it. I didn't do the flower-petal method. I would redo the cable using this method, if the cable is long enough. It's not. It's just barely long enough as is. I think I'll buy a new cable (only the inside part) and solder that using the flower-petal method.

Does anyone know where I can buy just the inside cable, with a steel ball at one end?

Most if not all motorcycle shops have bulk cable, cable housing, and terminals. Just take your old cable in and get the correct stuff, then solder it up. Piece of cake. I've made hundreds of cables over the years.

How in the world did you get silver to melt using an iron ?

On large stuff, I have to put a little O-2 in with the propane in the torch, but with small stuff, I can usually get the silver to flow if I use MAP gas, but an iron . . .? :?:

I use a big, 60 watt iron and flux. Without the flux, the solder won't flow.

I got the supplies from a RC model airplane shop.
