changing a 56 tooth rear sprocket for a 45 tooth sprocket

So I just got my new 45 tooth rear sprocket from bruce at endless journey cycles along with a 428 heavy duty chain. didn't really need the chain but I figured now would be the time to do it.

first thing was to get it up on the lift strapped down and remove the front sprocket cover.
next unhook brake linkage and backing plate support.

remove the chain guard, loosen up the chain tensioners and remove the axle.

reove the snap ring and sprocket bolts.

install new sprocket, snap ring and torque the nuts. I applied lock tite just to be sure and also put a dab on the end of the nut to see if it loosens up.

here's a picture of the rear wheel removed with the drum brake assembly and chain adjusters.
I removed the old chain and installed the new one taking off the extra links.

re-install rear wheel in reverse order, adjust chain tension to spec, tighen axle nut, re-install chain guard and front sprocket cover. lower bike to ground and recheck chain tension. if everything looks good, take it for a test burn and crack a cool one. in that order. everything went pretty straight forward and was as easy as I expected it would be. can't wait to see how much difference this sprocket makes in motor revs.

Beware that some owners have had trouble with the cush drive bushings and studs. The fix is to use Honda replacement parts, which are cheap and plentiful.

Bruce comes through once again!!

You will see a world of difference--not a huge leap in top speed, but it will cruise at 60 mph (indicated) with much, much, much less effort than the stock one did at 45-50 mph (indicated) !! 8)

IIRC, the bushings come apart and allow the studs to bend or break. The Honda bushings are much better quality.

How is it?

SO how is it? I am going to get a smaller rear sprocket as soon as I can. I wasnt sure which size to drop down to. I have a 56 now, so is 45 the way to go? Id like to be able to do 60 comfortably. Right now I can start off in second no problem, not sure if that helps.

If it will ever stop raining up here in the northeast I'll let you guys know how it runs. I was able to take it for a quick burn ( between rain showers ) and it made a world of difference on cruising speed. I'd also give Bruce a call at endless journey cycles if your looking for a sprocket. Great guy to deal with and super fast shipping.

Mike, immediately get a 45...do not pass 'Go', do not collect $200 My old Jetmoto enduro could cruise at (an indicated) 60 very comfortably once I replaced the rear sprocket with a 45 (although it might have been a 44 )

Before that, the bike sounded like it was ready to explode at anything approaching (an indicated) 50 mph

See if Bruce has any more of the 45's

45 tooth

Thanks, thats exactly what I needed to know. My bike does 60 pretty well actually, and Im really really really surprized at the lack of shcky, scetchy, vibration. Its not bad at all. Once I get the 45 tooth on there this thing might just be a Highway dream machine. Only time will tell lol.

Thing about mine is that its a really different bolt pattern, and I really want to get it before this weekend so I can take a road trip. How do I get a hold of Bruce? Anybody have a number?

Thanks

Mike
