I haven't opened my oil contaminant separator (OCS). However, Detours has examined the internal construction of the OCS, and I don't remember him mentioning anything about a sponge inside the OCS.

Indeed, if the OCS contains an internal sponge, a straight tube from the stator cover is more important than the orientation of the OCS. Nevertheless, if you orient the OCS with the tube at the top, and the clamp at the bottom, you will certainly have less of a kink in the tube.
The filter is porous, open cell foam. Maybe that's what Gerry meant by 'sponge'. It is shaped like an opened ended cylinder or cup. In my testing, I found that less fuel was collected in the tube with the orientation below.

In this orientation, vapor hits the filter wall and then goes up through the top wall. The resistance of going through two filter walls drops the pressure and reduces condensation. This keep the filter from saturating (as much) and drips less liquid into the catch tube.
