SW-Motech tankring mod

Well ok, this isn't really a mod, but I found a tankring from SW-Motech that fits the RX3. Now I can move my tankbag from the Vstrom to the RX3 and back.

I really like tankring tank bags. They don't scratch the paint like magnetic or strap on bags and unclip with a quick release. All you do is bolt on a mounting plate to the tankring and the bag snaps on to that. A quick wire pull releases the bag. The downside is the high cost compared to other types of tank bags.

My SW-Motech tank bag is called the 'Engage' ... AKA ... the 'Non-Electric QUICK-LOCK EVO Engage Tankbag'. It has a 7 liter capacity and can easily carry 2 quarts of oil or 2 full size water bottles with room to spare. There are side pockets, a waterproof cover, a carry handle and attachment points for accessories like a map case.

I don't like the gap under the curve, but that's as far forward as you can mount it. The Daypack or Micro models would probably fit better, but they're also smaller.

You can buy the SW-Motech 'Engage' tankbag with tankring here for $239. Just be sure to select the Type 115 tankring.

Since I only needed the tankring, I bought it individually at Twisted Throttle for $42.

SW-Motech makes several types of 7-bolt tankrings. For the RX3, be sure to get the Type 115 QUICK-LOCK EVO Tankring with 7 or 8 screws for YAMAHA/SUZUKI (part # TRT.00.640.11500/B).

DO NOT get the 7-bolt Kawasaki tankring ... it's too wide and the holes will not line up. (I know because I ordered it and now have to send it back)

For installation, all you do is remove four bolts, line up the new tankring, and install the supplied longer bolts. Couldn't get any easier.

The gas cap remains unobstructed and you can open it normally after removing the tank bag.

This close-up shows how the tank bag really doesn't touch the tank. You can also see a loop of wire under the bag on the left. Pull that to release the bag from the tank ring.

It's a very solid mount that will not fall off or release accidentally. After snapping the bag onto the ring, I give it a couple of tugs to make sure it's secure.

It's honestly kind of a pain to pull that wire, but on the other hand, it would take at least a little effort to steal.

That's pretty cool! I'd be curious to see how well the smaller version fits the RX3.

Thanks for this information. My next tank bag is going to be that setup, the others cause scratches no matter how hard you try and prevent it.

I edited my comments to add the links to Twisted Throttle where I ordered the tankring.

For a cheaper tankring bag, check out Givi and Cortech. But be sure to choose a tankring that fits:
  • 7-bolt Yamaha (e.g. 2003-06 XJR 1300)
  • 7/8 bolt Suzuki (e.g. 2001-07 DL1000)

I chose the SW-Motech bag for my Vstrom because I liked the fit and volume, but I did choke a little on the price.

I did a little bit more research and got some part numbers for other strapless tankring bags that fit the RX3. I haven't purchased or tried these, but they're designed to fit the same 7-bolt bikes as the SW-Motech Type 115, so they ought to fit.

Both are less expensive than the SW-Motech bags and twist off to remove, unlike SW-Motech's cable release. Givi has a lot of bags to choose from. Cortech just has the one bag with an optional GPS add-on as far as I can tell.
