Oil Analysis

I received the oil analysis back from Blackstone.

Oil sample taken at 2,400 miles on the engine,
1,000 miles on Mobil1 Racing 4T 10w40 oil.

The only thing of concern is the high amount of aluminum in the oil.

...much higher than the "universal averages".

I was also supposed to get an estimate of how much "life" was still left in the oil, but didn't.

There is a TBN number that is supposed to indicate the remaining oil life, but I don't know how to interpret it.

Will call tomorrow to see if I can find out.

I will get one more analysis around 5,000 miles.

I disagree with Blackstone on the use of synthetic vs.conventional oil.
I believe as most do that synthetic is worth the additional cost especially in motorcycles.
The sweeter shifting alone warrants using it.
And as for an excessive amount of aluminum in your oil I wouldn't be too concerned about that in a low mileage report.

Thanks for posting the Blackstone oil analysis. I also would not be concerned regarding the amount of aluminum in the oil from a new engine.

Deleted reference.

I'll be very curious to see if mine has less fuel in oil on the next check. You had a bit more mileage.

What would make you think posting an oil analysis would generate into an oil thread ? HaHa.

They probably deal with way more cars than motorcycles so their opinion is
Slanted.Simply have to take oil in the gearbox consideration when dealing with motorcycles.

No need to worry as the arguments in oil are made brand vs.brand.
Not too much with synthetic vs. conventional.

I know, silly me.

But I'm new to the forum, and didn't want to start any oil wars...

I noticed you had 4.5 % fuel. Pretty high IMO.

You had 500 miles on your oil, and I had 1,000 miles with 1% fuel.

I talked with a tech at Blackstone today. He said there was nothing to worry about in the report.

I asked about the TBN number which is supposed to indicate the amount of additives left in the oil.

My TBN number was 6.6. The tech said that new, unused oil has a TBN number of 9 or 10, and there is no concern until it gets down to 1.

He also said that they haven't done many analysis' on the NC 250 engine, so the averages that they compare to may not be entirely accurate until they get more samples.

He was a little surprised about the aluminum content when I told him that this was the fourth oil change I have done...200, 600, 1400, and 2400 miles.

I'm at 3,200 miles now, and will probably send in one more sample at 4,000 miles

I'm not overly concerned about too much wear, but the little 250 is a hard working engine. It seems to like 6,000 to 8,000 rpm all the time.

Jbfla, when you had your oil tested, do you know what position your OCS was in? I'm curious if it was in the official orientation or not.

Official position

The OCS was in what was previously known as the "wrong" position, as delivered by CSC, when the oil sample was taken.

I changed the OCS to what is now the "new", wrong position.....

detours, I was thinking the same thing? Now where does that OCS dump back in to? I need to check mine, my bike is at my in-laws though, cause I'm still waiting on damn tags from the DMV.

The OCS tubing connects the crankcase and the airbox. The low pressure in the airbox (relative to the crankcase) pulls light fuel and water vapors up to the air intake to burn in combustion. Heavy oil vapor and contaminants can't travel up the tube and drip back down into the catchtube. Likewise, any water or fuel vapors that condense as liquid in the lines also drip back down.
