Keep us updated on the shifting problem, I have some more ideas if these don't work. It is possible that holds on the shift star on is loose and this can cause a real problem however it usually causes the most problems in and around third gear(the voice of experience). A search of shift problems should find these posts.

Sometimes the gear shift indicator wires get fouled, crushed or snagged in the vicinty of the engine cover over the front sprocket...not a guess either, but I have been known to hypothesize.

My bike was doing the same thing. It ended being a loose wire inside the giant rubber boot of wires or as I like to call it the rats nest!
