I have not seen any other mention so I'll bring up the fact that the latest RX3 centerstand cannot be deployed/retracted unless the side stand is also deployed. It's not a big deal, just unexpected.

Peter Y.

I was wondering about that. Thanks for mentioning it. I had them throw my center stand in the box, therefore I will be installing it when I get the bike tomorrow. When you do finally have the center stand deployed, can your retract back the side stand? Or will they always be deployed together.

Thanks in advance for the info! :thanks:

I prefer to deploy the side stand before the center stand, so I haven't tried to do it otherwise. ;) However, I always retract the side stand before I retract the center stand; I don't have any problems whatsoever doing this. :)

Thank you brother! Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday. I'm going to get my tool box ready for tomorrow's delivery. I hope it comes in the morning. That way I can get a plate on that baby by mid-day and ride it around for a bit. :yay:

I broke the 'Good Idea Cut-Off Point" rule...Don't make any mods to the bike just prior to a trip. Tomorrow I launch for a short trip to the HU meeting in Virginia. Today I mounted a GPS. What could possibly go wrong...

Lots of folks like RAM mounts, I hate them. Thus I'm stuck making my own. I start out with some scrap aluminum and fab up some 10mm spacers:https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/2016-Zongchen-RX3/i-GvTFXkT/0/M/DSCF0121-M.jpgThese allow me to mount a plate above the handlebar mount:

Then I need a bracket for the GPS. I have had terrible luck in guessing the exact angle to mount the GPS so I can read it under way so this time I'm making it adjustable for angle.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/2016-Zongchen-RX3/i-rsrgpx2/0/M/DSCF0122-M.jpgI also mount anti-vibration pads (3mmX15 from www.quadrocopter.com (http://www.quadrocopter.com)) because I have had problems with high frequency vibration killing the electrical contacts between the mount and the GPS.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/2016-Zongchen-RX3/i-zdwdxtt/0/M/DSCF0126-M.jpg
with it all bolted up there is still room for the ignition key.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/2016-Zongchen-RX3/i-ftRH87n/0/M/DSCF0129-M.jpg
Now to see if this rig survives real world use, wish me luck!

Thanks for the kind words. Yes, tach and speedo are in clear view...gas means I have to move my head a bit. I could not move the GPS to the left much more and still clear the windscreen. No plans to make any more. The labor required is embarrassing because I'm not a machinist, just a hobby tinker type. It's like the old saying "A grinder and paint make me the welder I ain't." In this case it's a matter of being able to throw away lots of scrap in order to get one part that might fit. Oh, and I intend to take lots of photos at HU.

Well campfire friends, I just got back from the HU Virginia meeting. This was a 180 or so mile ride from home to Appomattox, Virginia, so it was a good distance to see how the Zong would do with a load. My ride was on US40, which bisects Ft. Pickett (an Army National Guard Base). Tanks really do cross the road!
https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorcycle-Trip/Horizons-Unlimited-VA-meet/i-n2qGCzJ/0/M/DSCF0134-M.jpg

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorcycle-Trip/Horizons-Unlimited-VA-meet/i-gc69282/0/M/DSCF0139-M.jpg another (WW1) tank by the VFW in Crewe, Virginia.

Bottom line, the suspension finally felt good! This is a big change from my experience while breaking in the engine. With no camping gear loaded and the shock preload totally backed off the suspension was entirely too stiff. The difference on this trip was so pronounced that I weighed my load as soon as I got home so I could quantify what it took to get everything working. Basically it took 83 lbs more than my normal 195 lb body weight. Thus, the 400/450 spring on the Progressive shock is set up for someone who weighs between 250 and 275 lbs.

OK beyond the suspension, the bike ran just fine on two lane roads doing 55-60 with no issues. Yes, going up a hill can mean WFO in some cases due to the load. Still, it was a fun ride.

The HU meeting was at a 4-H camp in the middle of a state park.

This is a great location, being within easy riding distance from a number of major metro centers on the East Coast. I'm guessing they had 200 attendees. Of course we had people from all over the world so it's hard to call this just a regional event. Throughout the 3 days there was a steady stream of presentations about various phases of motorcycle travel, as well as detailed slide shows about specific journeys.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorcycle-Trip/Horizons-Unlimited-VA-meet/i-48mNdR7/0/M/DSCF0151-M.jpg Two guys had recently gone around the world in 93 days! There were trips to South America, Mongolia, Africa, and places I had hardly known to exist. Suffice to say the topics covered were fascinating. Makes one want to chuck it all and go for a long ride...maybe a year or three.

I thought I'd have the only Zong but that was not the case. Imaging my surprise to see a white RX3 before I had even gotten off my bike.
https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorcycle-Trip/Horizons-Unlimited-VA-meet/i-grt6W5N/0/M/DSCF0140-M.jpgThe white one belongs to Andy Pain, from Wisconsin. Andy is the go-to guy when it comes to minimalist motorcycle travel. He has written a few small books on the subject and had a one hour presentation on the subject.
I noticed that throughout the weekend there were people gathered around the Zongs and Andy was answering questions.

If you want to get inspired, attend a HU meeting. Be prepared to answer lots of questions about the Zong. The BMW rondels on my bike caused some serious head scratching. One guy was actually pissed off at the thought that the Chinese had made an identical clone of this little BMW (waving at Andy's white Zong). Imaging how deflated he was when I admitted that the 'little BMW was, indeed, another Zong). Great fun!

I think I know what happened. I ordered a 13t sprocket, nut and spare lock washer at the same time I ordered the bike. It looks like the shop installed the 13t (thank you!). Two trips to the hardware store later and I can confirm the nut is indeed a 32 mm. Not sure if it was original or the spare I ordered, I will measure the "spare" nut shipped with my original 14t with calipers tomorrow, I'm guessing it will be 30 mm. A little humbling that I didn't catch the 13t was on there already and the shiny new sprocket sent to me was actually the original 14t. Oh well, quality time spent bonding with the bike  By the way, took the bike offroad yesterday for the first time, it did well but I was really looking forward to gearing it down with the 13t to help with the steep sections...imagine my surprise when I found it was already installed. Not sure I want to gear any lower as I want to be able to freeway commute occasionally. Thanks for the feedback!

https://photos.smugmug.com/Motorcycle-Trip/Horizons-Unlimited-VA-meet/i-grt6W5N/0/M/DSCF0140-M.jpgThe white one belongs to Andy Pain, from Wisconsin.

Great fun!

What a great time it was Peter! That was an awesome right up. It was beyond a pleasure to meet you face to face. Hopefully the open road will bring us together again soon, only yeah, this time, on my new RX3. haha!

Great post about VA HU trip. This got me so excited to attend one that I finally ordered myself a red RX-3 after researching for months. This site is great and I really enjoy reading people's experiences with this bike. CSC has made the ordering process so easy. My bike was built and boxed in 3 days from my order and will ship today (just ahead of arrival of TTs)! I am like a kid waiting for Christmas day!!! Now I am planning my trip to attend the HU meeting in NC in October.

My husband and I might come done to HU-NC. I think Andy, my buddy from Milwaukee that Peter wrote about in his review, will be there. Not only that, but his wife has a red RX3, so they might be down there with both of their bikes. There might possibly be a fleet of CSC bikes there. How exciting is that!!:hehe:

Ok - my new little boy arrived yesterday in good order. My friend Mark Zimmerman (author of The Essential Guide to Motorcycle Maintenance (http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Guide-Motorcycle-Maintenance-Techniques/dp/1884313418?ie=UTF8&keywords=The%20Essentials%20of%20Motorcycle%20Main tenance&qid=1462525983&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1)) was on hand to help me receive, uncrate, and assemble Rex along with my friend Brenda. Aside from a few registration glitches with my local DMV all is well and he is enjoying his new surroundings and getting acquainted with his siblings in the garage. Rainy week here so not sure when we'll get some miles in. I have a D/S ride to lead on Saturday (only dry day) with the XT so he may not see any on-tar time until sometime later next week.

May I introduce Rex!:

So,pyoungbl,,, your saying the progressive shock is too stiff for someone like me. (200 lbs)??? I so badly wanted to save up an get that shock ,, as I can't hardly take the harshness of the stock shock. I was under the impression that the progressive unit was the holy grail suspension fix for the rx3.

pyoungbl
05-06-2016, 01:22 PM
Fishman10, as delivered the Progressive shock with 400/450 spring had too much preload for my weight. I'm 195# without riding gear. I backed off on the preload until it was just finger tight, thus as far as it would go and still be set on the spring. Bear in mind, the shock is two components...spring and dampener. I believe the dampening portion of the Progressive shock is a superior part. You always have to match the spring part with the rider and his gear.

Last week I did a 400 mile camping trip. With the bike loaded for camping, about 65#, and my riding gear on, the total load was about 275#. The bike ran great and the suspension was just fine. I think that three factors came into play: full load on the bike, some break-in miles on the suspension, and reduced compression/rebound setting. I now have C/R set at 2 out of 5.

Before the trip I had about 240 miles on the bike. I had greased the suspension link bearings but the various moving parts must have been still bedding in. Now, with 685 miles I want to try riding without the extra weight. I suspect it will be OK. To get sag where it should be (per the Race Tech Suspension Bible...30% of travel) I actually need to add just a touch of pre-load. Riding is always the final test and if I still need a softer spring for the way I ride there are options on the Progressive Suspension web site. With all that said, the stock seat is the weak point for traveling. I have ordered the upgrade seat from CSC. I'll try that for a trip or two.

At the moment I'm doing the first service. After I get through this ordeal I'll be ready to ride more. BTW, all my valves were tight. My smallest feeler gauge is .04mm and would not fit on any of the valves. Now they are all at .06mm. This first service is not one to skip!

Indeed, that has been my experience, as well. You offer excellent advice. :) The valve clearances tend to close quickly for the new RX3 bikes. Therefore, don't delay the first valve lash inspection. Also, I recommend checking the valve lash every 2,500 miles until the valve lash stabilizes. ;)

For anyone attempting to register their bike in CT - it must be inspected at the Wethersfield or Hamden DMV locations. DMV will not grant a registration otherwise as Zongshen is not a recognized manufacturer in the State of CT. Those RX3 owners in CT who got a registration - got it erroneously from what I am told. And DMV employees that gave it to them will be disciplined - which I feel bad about. And, I have been told that if I was to ride my bike up to the DMV location for inspection, that DMV has the right to impound it - must be trailered. My temporary registration I received yesterday was revoked today for this reason (refund pending).

So if you are a CT RX3 owner, please avoid the time and frustration I have gone through and follow the process above for the best results in getting a tag for your bike.

Wow... not sure why I'm surprised that DMVs across the county don't seem to talk to one another. These are, after all, government offices. And I'm really sorry to hear of the trouble you've had to go through to get your RX3 registered. But I applaud your advisory as it would truly stink to have your brand new RX3 impounded because it was ridden to the DMV rather than trailered. That's an incredibly valuable notice to provide.

Update on the CT DMV Registration debacle for Zongshen products: Sarah from CSC has contacted me stating I would be required to trailer the bike across the entire State of CT to the Wethersfield DMV to have it inspected as that is the only way I can get it registered. Well, now that I am out of vacation time and do not have any means to trailer the bike to the DMV, we seem to be at an impass . . .

I have yet to hear how this bike would ever get on the list of approved manufacturers so that every CT buyer of a CSC product could avoid this kind of hassle. How did all the other approved manufacturers get on the list - Kawasaki, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, BMW, Triumph, Ducati, Moto Guzzi, etc.???????

To the CT people...I read the statute. I think yall are talking to the wrong people to make a decision, and you are getting shafted. In the opening of the state statue you linked... "

Obtaining a Manufacturer's License

To obtain a Manufacturer's License under Connecticut State Law Title 14 Sec. 14-67a for a manufacturer or distributor of motor vehicles who sells products in Connecticut there are several documents which must be submitted. Listed below are the documents necessary to obtain a license"

What I am reading is for someone to manufacture and then distribute, or either, within your state. You didn't purchase the bike IN your state. It is neither manufactured nor sold in your state. You imported it from an outside state, you provided insurance in your state, and you need to speak with a higher level supervisor. I am sure there are old, feeble people who cannot or do not have the means to travel for hours across the state to register a car. Is that the ONLY state inspection location in CT? In one place? There is no way that is possible. They'd lose money on interstate commerce if they inspect trucks and the like there as well. In some states police/state troopers/highway patrol officers can inspect it either at their office or in person in the field, in MS every dealership and most tire shops are "state inspection stations" although they did away with that ridiculous stuff last year.
Keep calling. Talk to someone else. Even the Director of the whole organization has a phone number and an email. Email him and CC someone even higher than him. NO one likes being called onto the carpet for a poor decision. That's why so many dumbass ones are being made.

Keep calling. Talk to someone else. Even the Director of the whole organization has a phone number and an email. Email him and CC someone even higher than him. NO one likes being called onto the carpet for a poor decision. That's why so many dumbass ones are being made.

There are only two locations in the State of CT that can inspect a vehicle in this manner - Wethersfield and Hamden. Both locations are very far away, and located in nasty, traffic filled urban areas. Should it be reasonably expected that everyone who buys a Zongshen product should go through this pain of inspection etc. when all the other major manfucturers do not have to????

This is a matter for CSC to handle - they are the ones who need Zongshen added to the approved manufacturer's list so they can sell bikes in our State without causing their customers an inordinate amount of pain in the registration process. This is not a process for us as consumers to have to deal with and I am not spending any more of my time or effort on this. I have provided them all the information I could possibly find from the State and the DMV and now it is their job to get Zongshen recognized in the State of CT. Otherwise, everyone else in CT who wants a bike will have to deal with this hassle. I don't think CSC wants to limit their sales in CT by people passing on their bikes because of this issue. I know they will figure it out - I have faith.

I can say that with all the bureaucratic BS that we have to put up with here in CA, the one and only bright side of the paperwork nightmare is that dealers, whether we buy used or new, have to do all the DMV work for us. Between the hassle and waiting in line at DMV, the nominal fee we pay is more than worth it.

Yeah, I agree,

the exhaust routing sucks. The Chinese forum, where these images came from, were saying pretty much the same thing.

Final word in from CSC on the CT registration issue - there is nothing they can do. Any CT resident who purchases a bike from them has to get it inspected at the Wethersfield or Hamden DMV in order for it to be registered. Ghaniba got his bike inspected yesterday and was supposed to get it registered today - we'll see if he is successful. Still does not fix my issue as I have no way to get the bike across the State to either DMV location. So, now I have a bike that will most likely sit for quite some time before it can be registered. This has me disgusted enough to put it up for sale and not even bother. I have cancelled my formal review of the bike with my editor.

Really sorry to hear that, DS Chic. But it's a state issue, and one that even Tesla had to address (albeit a slightly different twist.) I can appreciate that going across the state to get this registered is a chore. Would it be possible for to assist you in proxy and trailer your bike as your representative to the inspection station? (Maybe another Chinarider member or ADVrider member?)

Or do the rules change at all if it's a bike registered in another state and then brought in-state for registration? (i.e. Register in New York or PA with a friend's address? And then bring it in to CT?)

Sorry... just stretching for ideas as I hate for this experience to sour your overarching experience with the RX3. Unfortunately every state has rules/regulations that are as onerous as they are diverse.

Thank you RT. My issue is this - I have very limited time (full time job) and lead a D/S riding group on the weekends, in addition to not having easy access to a trailer. This bike was to be a test for a future fleet of bikes for my budding NE moto touring business. I can't go through this once, much less six more times to get a fleet registered so there really is no reason to keep the bike.

I will be in touch with Steve at CSC to discuss sending the bike back for a refund.

Best to all CSC owners - may you enjoy many happy miles on your bikes.

There are a lot of very informative pics on this forum and I find it hard to remember when and where I saw them but occasionally would like to see them again because they are relevant to what ever I'm doing to my bike at the time. Or would it be to redundant? thanks ,rj

The oil drain plug under the engine is accessible without removing the skid plate on all RX3 bikes.

I strongly suggest removing the skid plate to drain the oil, since removing the two oil strainer bolts and the oil filter cover will make a huge mess if you don't remove the skid plate. ;)

Also, I don't have any complaints about the stock brakes, as long as you install the Honda (EBC FA185) sintered brake pads for the front brake. ;)

Yes, the star gear is connected through the right half of the crankcase to the shift drum. The shift drum actuates the shift forks, which change gears in the transmission.

The star gear is actuated by the shift pawl assembly, which is actuated in turn by the shift lever on the left side of the engine.

I think it was RJ that mentioned concern about throttle wrist fatigue on a forthcoming long distance ride. I suggest one of these. A good addition to a throttle locking device, but doesn't take the place of one.

rjmorel

thanks Jay. I think a way to hold the throttle on while riding is one of the more important farkles if you ride many long days. I use to have a DR650 that I put an actual automobile cruise control on and that was one of the best things I did to the bike. On my RX3 I have a 3D printed one I made that holds up ok and consider these kind or a cramp buster to be great for transferring from bike to bike if you have multiple bikes to ride. Easy on and off if you don't need it for a short ride around town.
I am planning a Iron Butt 1000 on my RX3 June 18th. That is suppose to be the longest day this summer as far as day light. Wouldn't want to attempt it w/o a way to hold the throttle on. I plan on changing the engine oil from the Honda 10-40 dino oil I've been using to the 20-50 synthetic that CSC sells to hopefully give the engine the best possible protection for running 20+ hours straight except for fuel stops. It would make more sense to use my Honda NC700x but I want to use the RX3 and make it a challenge and for the bragging rights. First RX3 to do a Iron Butt 1000!!!! Also may put back on the original rear tire which should have several thousand miles left in it as the Shinko 244 on there now really drones at 60-65 and if I had to listen to it for 20+ hours I think I'd go gaga. rj

Spud,

Was there any indication the tab washer on your crankshaft nut had been improperly bent over? Or do you suspect the nut was loose and slowly worked to unbend the tab washer?

No, I think the engine was assembled properly. The tab of the locking washer which fits into the hole of the primary drive gear broke off, which allowed the entire locking washer to rotate with the crankshaft nut. I think I just got a defective locking washer, which is probably very rare. ;)

I received my repair parts from CSC yesterday. The replacement locking washer looks good and strong, so I don't think I will have any future problems of this nature.

then again.
zong translates to Total
shen translates to Dios which tanslates to god

so Zǒng shén means "total god"

(some other meanins of shen are: spirit, diety, expression)

(zong can translate as: total, overall, always, chief, head) or
(zhong which can be used as a preposition meaning: in, within, among, etc)

could be something along the lines of

in spirit
total expression
among God

etc

but the test with any translation is if it can translate back again. the only one that translates back is total god, they sure are modest ;)

however zhongsheng translates to being/presence/existence - or roughly soul

it might be a bit of a play on words

Not sure of the relationship of the dragon to the RX series motorcycles from Zongshen, though. Seems Zongshen is relating "Cyclone" as the key word for this series of adventure bikes.

I do know about 8 years ago, Zongshen was using the motto, "be dragonized."

I've got a Chinese wife, so I've got some experience in China and with the language.

Translating Chinese characters requires context to do properly. Regardless of dialect, the characters remain the same. Most times, the definition of the character remains the same, but not always. Most times, the pronunciation of the character will be very different even though the character and the meaning are the same.

宗申 - Expressed in Pinyin, this is zōng shēn.

These are the characters that Zongshen uses on their own web site, so I assume they are correct.

宗 = Ancestor
申 = to state, express, explain

There's no entry in my Chinese dictionary that has these characters together, so to try and get the meaning from literal translation is hopeless.

Cheers,

Dan K.

Welcome; we are glad you joined us. :hi:

Congratulations on purchasing your Zongshen RX3. Please post lots of photographs after your new bike arrives. :)

Arrived last week!
Adventure began immediately.
Truck arrived with only a small Tommy Lift and a hand truck.
There was no way that pallet was going to fit on that lift!
Driver was great and we took the bike out of crate in the truck and rolled it onto the lift. I held it while lowering it to the ground. As it started down it seemed to tilt away from the truck and I was losing my balance. I shouted and the driver grabbed the bike and steadied it. Close call, we were about 3 feet off the ground!
The RX3 exceeded my expectations and all my friends.

One question, anyone else get some backfires when letting off accelerator?
Hoping this will reduce with break-in.

Also, I am not having a problem finding neutral. In fact I found it a couple times when accelerating and shifting from 1st to 2nd.

I occasionally get a small pop from the exhaust during deceleration. These backfires should diminish after engine break-in. ;)

Shift more forcefully from 1st to 2nd gear, and the problem will disappear. This scenario can happen with many motorcycle transmissions.

I've found it nearly impossible to get the transmission into neutral while the bike is sitting still. If I rock it back-and-forth an inch or two, that usually helps. I've gotten in the habit of snicking it into neutral just as I roll to a stop.

Cheers,

Dan K.

To me, mounting the outer bolts/nuts on the windshield was more frustrating than expected, unless I missed the obvious in my haste.

Remove the headlight (just unbolt the two sides allens) and it's a breeze, much simpler than trying to squeeze your fingers and tools in there

Ah yes. Of course, I just put the headlight back in after trouble shooting the blinker and having the whole contraption on my workbench. Slow learner......
Thanks for the heads-up!

**Though it looks very similar to the parts listings on the CSC website, It is actually for the carb version in Malaysia.**

That said, I think it is still a very useful source of information. :)

Thanks for the warning. The .RAR file is another file compression format that Microsoft doesn't recognize. You will need to download an external file compression/decompression app to open the file. (7zip is one that I use on my Windows machines.)

It sounds like you have some ransomeware that was installed. If you have another browser (Chrome, Firefox instead of Internet Explorer), you can open one of those browsers and I recommend downloading the free AVG antivirus application. They do a great job of staying current and it should find and eliminate that malware. Plus... AVG is free.

I switched to iMacs and OS X to avoid the many viruses and malware out there. I do have a Windows partition, but if anything were to happen, I can recover using OS X. Thankfully AVG has kept me "clean."

ook the RX3 out for an early morning ride to Silverado Canyon. (First RX3 to Silverado Canyon?) Unfortunately the trail head leading to Santiago Peak was closed, but I rode around some of the roads at the bottom of the canyon. I got into some deep gravel and that got a little sketchy. Thankfully the RX3 is light and balanced, so easy to keep upright.

I forgot to reset the trip display on the Garmin Nuvi, but the top speed for the day was 81.8 mph (GPS measured.) This was sitting full upright (no tuck), and flat out at near-sea level and on a flat highway. I'm running a 42 tooth rear gear which drops the RPMs below redline at top speed. The stock gearing (44T rear sprocket) took me beyond redline, but I achieved an 84.1 mph top speed. Different day, different conditions, but that not withstanding, I'd prefer to stay out of redline.

Motorcycle.com just published their review of the RC3. Overall, it's favorable, but somewhat twitchy handling turned off a few of the reviewers.

Oddly, they found the shifting notchy, which has not been my experience with my RX3, even when new.

I think the RC3 is going to be in for a struggle vs the competition for sport bikes. Discounted Ninja 250/300, CBR 250/300, Yamaha R3, even Duke 390's are all out there for 3500-5000 dollars in large quantity's. With shipping/fees your looking at 3275 for the RC3 right now. It's REALLY easy to find a CBR300 for that price very lightly used that will have little depreciation from the point that you begin using it. I think the Naked version would sell better at 2500 dollars myself. Really only the 300F to compete with then.

The RX3 has no direct competition right now. If Honda dropped a 250/300cc Africa Twin for 5000 do you think people would still pick the 725 dollar cheaper RX3 at that point ? A Yamaha 321cc Tenere would also be very hard to compete against. For now those brands don't want to bring anything like that, probably so they don't restrict sales of the higher profit larger bikes selling to those who would be fine with a 300 instead.

Lee, I believe that the Big 3 cannot get within $1K of CSC on any size bike. CSC is running such a lean operation they have a huge advantage. The challenge is going to be the fact that Zong owners are going to have to be much more hands on than those with a strong dealer network. Add in the fact that our Zongs require more frequent valve adjustments. Anyone afraid to wrench on the bike will pay more for the Japanese product.

My 2016 shifting, with only 160 miles mind you, is notchy as well but I'm confident if will smooth out with use and trying different oils as I go. The overall performance on the tranny is great .....especially with the 13T switch.

I have no complaints about my 2015 and it only has 120 on it. I can even find neutral most of the time from 1st. I guess I'm just used to big gear boxes from big displacement bikes that go "WHAM!" when you put them in gear.

Looks like a great ride! 82 is really moving on a 250, especially with the added drag of saddlebags and being upright. My DRZ400S wouldn't run a lot faster than that. Nice bike!

I agree 100%.

If I did not already own my DRZ, I'd almost certainly get an RC3 as it would have met my needs well and there is basically no competition.

The RC3 has a lot of competition, and the other bikes are ALSO very inexpensive (in the big picture). I've seen less than year old KTM 390's in the high $3,000 range and it took all my restraint (not much there, mind you) to not get one.

I don't know Cycletrader is full of 2999 dollar 2015 CBR300s right now, those aren't even used! For now CSC has the market on small ADV bikes and the TT250s I'm sure are selling well. The RX4 will probably sell very well as people have been begging for a 450adv bike forever.

Willy, the crash bars are excellent aren't they? I've dropped mine three times in dirt and my friend who bought his at the same time a dozen drops, only minor scratches on the crash bars, it's very well protected! I slowly dropped my Stelvio last week and it bent the rear brake lever in. Fortunately that was less than 100 to replace. We had three people to pick it up. Honestly I'm a big guy and stronger than average, I'm 37 with a life as military and commercial fishing and that bike is no joke to pick up. I'm not sure I could safely get it upright on any incline. I'm trading it this weekend for a Street Triple and using the RX3 for all ADV rides.

I agree it is dry in places but I couldn't watch it and not be impressed by how hard Zongshen is beating on the quality drum rather than mass quantity at the cheapest price. That has been the "made in China" knock for a long time, and deservedly so. . . . So far my experience with my RX3 only reinforces that perception of quality commitment. I honestly believe their drive to be the best in quality is a real deal changer for the Chinese motorcycling industry in global competition. Should they continue with that single minded focus consumers will less and less look past them based solely on the "it's a China bike" mindset . Additionally whether domestic & Asian/Pacific rim auto manufacturers accept it or not a Chinese auto manufacturer with a like-minded business approach to Zong is coming to North America - only a matter of time. 25 years ago people laughed at Hyundai cars . . . . . I don't believe they are laughing any longer. Take a good look at the new Buick Envision folks . . . it's already happening under licensing. Nearly 3 years ago people on forums and in the online motorcycling media were laughing at and openly belittling CSC/Zong (and CR supporters) over their North American introduction announcement. I'm just betting there are fewer laughs today.

And wow, that sidestand foot is cool! If I hadn't already jerry-rigged a Vstrom 1000 foot to work, that would be on my list. The small foot is really a weak point for an adv bike. It even digs into pavement at stops. The extra height also helps with my 19" front wheel.

Now im about as American Midwest as they come...

Born between two stalks of corn... party in barns, talk about cheese.. ya know
Iv always liked motorcycles and 4wheelers..
Been riding and crashing them my whole life.
Mom and pop had me on their bikes from the time i could walk..

I remember quite clearly, my first ride on my dads New 1981 Yamaha 250 enduro.. Black frame, orange and white gas tank.
He was out driving it for a while that morning.
after a bit, my mom walked me out to see him. I didn't know any better, but Dad looked like a Pro to me. He did a few flybys, most likely to impress my young mother. I can almost hear him thinking 'See Dolly, this was a great Buy! Look how Good I Am!'
After his 'Most Excellent' demonstration, He came pulling up to us...
'This bike was massive... and angry looking. How could he even drive that thing?' 'I must be seeing things'
Before i knew it, i was being hoisted up by my armpits.. 'Oh boy, whats happening?!'
And He sat me down in front of him. i can feel the heat coming off the bikes midsection.. It was loud and shaking a lot.. Some smell is overpowering me and making my eyes water a bit. The vinal seat is digging into the back of my legs..

And i will never forget, for the rest of my life.. the first time i placed my hands on that cold steel gas tank.
already sensory overload... and we haven't even moved yet.
He lets go of me.
'mini panic'
I hear a clank and this shaking monstrosity starts to move!
Hearts Racing now!
Dad puts his hand around my midsection...
and it all starts form there.

Its funny how touching a steel gas tank can snap me back to that moment in a heart beat...
It doesn't matter if that bike was born in China, Italy or the US... it just makes me want to ride.

DIYcurran Best of wises on your desert race attempt on the RX3. I think if you take your time and don't get in a hurry and do stupid things on it , you'll make it OK. The suspension will hold you back and/ or get you into trouble if it gets rough and tuff out there. The motor and cooling should be bullet proof as long as you are reasonable with it. Good luck and be safe as it can get violent and dangerous in no time out there in the back 40 , Do keep us posted, rj

Ditto what rjmorel said. A lot of us are cheering you on! We want the down and dirty, like you said on your video (I subscribed to your channel on YouTube) on your preparedness, your gear, the bike, what you liked and didn't. A LOT of us I am sure wish we had the talent (me) and the time to do this.

Anyone try one of these kits to make your tube tires into tubless? Seems doable, rj

Simple idea, what would happen if the tire pressure becomes low? At 100 a wheel not too bad to try it

I wonder if the same could be accomplished with thick layer of 100% silicone to cover the nipples and a covering of gorilla duct tape over it

Good thinking with the silicone idea. As far as low pressure that's a concern but not for the riding I would do . Don't trials bikes run tubeless down to 4psi or is that a totally different setup? rj

JSYK: You need tubeless tires and safety beads on the rim in addition to sealed nipples for a full tubeless setup; OEM RX3 tires lack the tubeless membrane and will slowly leak air through the carcass and the OEM front rim lacks a safety bead. A rim lock is also recommended, but not necessary, to keep the tire locked on the rim in lieu of a tube. The stock rear rim is too wide for a rim lock (3.5" vs 2.5" max for rim lock).

I am going to try Tubliss in my 18" front stock wheel and a DIY rim sealing and Excel 2.5" rim with rim lock on my rear wheel and will share my results. Re: Outex, I worry that if one nipple leaked or needed adjustment I would have to tear up the whole setup rather than with sealing each nipple individually with silicone, Seal-All, Goop, etc you can diagnose and repair leaks without redoing the whole wheel. Also sealing just the nipples is much less reciprocating (spinning) weight than sealing the whole center well with tape. My .02

Here's (https://cyb.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/KTM/Tubeless/i-6pKDBnG) a well-made tutorial on DIY rim sealing.

Notice that the rim in the linked picture has a safety bead/ridge to hold the tire bead in place. I don't know that your rim has those.

I wasn't implying such a low pressure, but it may have to be pretty hi pressures to maintain that bead on a normal tire/rim that is designed for a tube.

I would definitely want tubless due to the simplicity and "plug-ability". Just not too excited about the higher costs involved.

Agreed , to be able to plug a hole on the bike out on the road would be way more convenient then having to remove tire and rim from bike then get tube out ,fix and remount. It's not like I'm doing 120 mph all day on my RX3 so I think safety wise if it holds air it would be great. Even if I had to add some air to it every week or so, rj

If you're good, you can spoon off one side of the tire while it's on the bike, patch the tube, and re-seat the tire.It can be a serious pain in the *** until you get your technique down.

So I got to thinking today about my 70's racing motocrossers that had 2 stroke motors. Which motor would last longer if you had an air cooled 4 stroke and an air cooled 2 stroke or both water cooled for that matter and rode them basically the same, like commuting same distances and same speeds. Would they roughly last the same amount of miles? Or would 4 stroke last longer with pressurized oil lubing it. Or would 2 stroke last longer always having clean oil lubing it either from a oil injector or premix in the tank.
Anyone have any hard data on this? Say between 250 single cylinder motors with same cooling and same carb or fuel injection?

No hard data but from experience I can tell you that the 4 stroke will last much longer between rebuilds. I used to have to do bore/piston/rings every other racing season with all my MX 2 strokes. On my street-ridden 2 strokes, I'd just let them slap, even though they were losing performance. Plus, with a 2 stroke you're counting on the crank seals to help maintain compression and they're a seriously wearable part. Not only that but the rings passing over ports will start to wear them quickly as the piston begins to slap. Not an issue with a 4 stroke.

The upside of a 2 stroke, as you know is that they're much lighter, less moving parts and much more power-per-displacement. I do miss all that power! As you remember, all you needed to so was clean up the ports and add an expansion chamber and it would make them monsters. :-)

So, now that Rex is all broken in, I thought it might be nice it he got out and saw a little more of New England. Hopped on him bright and early last weekend. Pointed him North and didn't stop until I got to mid-Vermont (Castleton) to visit friends from my riding group. He made the 350 mile round trip day ride just fine as well as did his rider. Extremely smooth at 7500 rpms+ and I must say it was a pleasant ride. My friends up north were anxious to get a look at him. My friend Jack even hardwired my Garmin mount so I could have my Garmin charging while riding. He was impressed with the fit and finish and overall value to the bike. While I had a bit of a challenge keeping up with my friends on their litre bikes, Rex did ok considering he's a quarter of their displacement. So, another box checked for the RX3 - capable machine for a long day in the saddle on tar. Probably start getting him in the dirt next Spring to see how he does there but thumps up so far.

Matty, I don't know what the shipping would be to you, but have you considered buying an assembled wheel (http://www.cscmotorcycles.com/Rear-wheel-with-spoke-p/z51-103.htm ) or just rim and spokes from CSC?

Welcome, we are glad you joined us.

I recommend you purchase the 17-inch spokes from either CSC or Minsk. Then you can purchase a size 2.50-17 rim locally, and either lace the wheel yourself, or have someone else lace it for you. You will have a very difficult time finding any good, fifteen-inch, dual sport tires.

As far as I am aware, all RX3 bikes in the UK have the 15 inch rear wheel.

I have found one place, in the UK, where you can buy a 15inch dual sport tyre and have one on my bike.

Kingstone 130/90 15 , I think spud had the same tyre fitted on his Zongshen ZS200GY-2 at one time

I'm still trying to source a nice 18inch front though
