What do you have planned for the forks?
cheesy
08-19-2012, 08:58 PM
^^^I have a 1994 Cannondale H400 frame looking to be turned into a bike. The solid fork may get the nod as the suspension fork weighs quite a bit more than the frame. The frame was designed for 700c wheels but I'm dropping down to 559 just to different.

Agreed Weld!
You all may recall I built a motorized bike with an 80cc 2 stroke China-engine and an old Trek I 'restored' a couple of years ago and it was a lot of fun. I've never ridden a real Whizzer but I bet it would be a dozen times better.

All we been doing since April is pulling our new place out of mothballs. It was empty for quite a while and neglected for far to long before aquiring it, so once the papers were signed....Mrs 2LZ and I have been at it.
It's SERIOUSLY jammed our riding time! :x ....but will all be worth it next year.
We redid the inside (clean, paint and repair) early on....and have been working on the outside relentlessly all season.
Here's a before....
http://i920.photobucket.com/albums/ad41/2LZ_photos/WSideBefore.jpg
...and here's the after. Lots of pressure washing....and worse yet, palm sanding all the cedar siding and lots of the redwood on the decks and railings. Obviously, we did the house in cedar oil and the decks/railings in redwood oil. Have I mentioned I hate ladders?

Thanks guys! :D Now you know why my poor Q has been collecting dust. Ah! I forgot to mention that also! The gutters and downspouts all the way around were PACKED with leaves and branches....and leaked badly at every seam.
Got them all cleaned out and pressure washed, sealed all the seams and then painted them all, including all the window casings, a cool deep chocolate brown so they kinda disapear. I didn't want anything taking away from the wood.

Amigos, thanks. I'm thinking that the VW is home built, a lot of ingenuity there. I was wondering if anyone would notice that carburetor , that Honda 50 was sitting in front of a mechanic's shop. The Cadillac limousine was siting in front of a shop in Cajamarca, no one could tell me the history of it. The tree is also in Cajamarca Spud, that walkway that goes up to another cathedral. Cajamarca is in the Northern Peruvian Andes, one of the most beautiful places in Peru, a lot of strife currently, the government has suspended personal rights, we were there for a week and found it very peaceful. Oh, I have post this photo, Charito and I walked into this small Chifa restaurant in Cajamarca, there was a large poster of Chairman Mao on the wall, really struck me as being odd.

Thanks for posting the pics of the AMC products. My Dad worked there for 30 years, about five of those years were at the AMC proving grounds in Burlington, WI. One of those five years was during my senior year in high school and as my last period was a study hall, I'd sneak out(with the principals blessing) and hang out at the 'Grounds'. Got to drive the 401 Gremlin prototype(scary fast), met Roger Penske(omg, omg, omg), and sat in the NASCAR Matador aka The Flying Brick.
My siblings and myself were all required to own an AMC product while we lived at home. I had an all black 1967 Ambassador DPL two door hardtop with a 290 v8. My younger sister had an American 440, little bro had a Javelin, and youngest sis had a Hornet, s/n00000001.

One of the best photos I've ever seen was taken at the Proving Grounds. Dad and some of his cohorts were crash testing some new alloy body bolts for a CJ7. The test consisted of one CJ7 and a reinforced concrete wall. The CJ was to hit the wall at 30mph to simulate a 60mph head on collision.
Well, the CJ did hit the wall at 30mph and every body bolt failed. The photo was taken milliseconds after initial impact and shows the body lifting off the frame. The only thing that kept the body from separating completely off the frame was the shifter knob. 8O
Bear in mind, these crash tests were performed outdoors with personnel in close proximity. Dad came home more than once with cuts and bruises from flying junk. Before the advent of using tow cables to do crash tests, the guys at AMC pushed the cars with a 1967 Marlin prototype equipped with a tricked out 390 and a 5.50:1 rear axle. Top speed was barely 65 mph but it got there fast. On its final run, the driver miscalculated his speed and distance and followed the crash vehicle into the wall. The driver walked away, thanks to the NASCAR restraints and full roll cage. They forever nicknamed him 'Crash'. After that, they developed a tow system using two 401 engines that were capable of simulating 90mph crashes.
Dad has the photo hanging in his den. Next time I'm up that way, I'll try to get a scan.

Some of the early crash tests were really cool to see. They didn't have all the complicated equipment that they have now. And they didn't have all the complicated computer simulation software when designing the vehicle, so there were frequently "surprises" as to what broke or how the vehicles reacted.
By the way, 30 mph into a barrier simulates a 30 mph head on crash with an equal weight vehicle. Common misconception that it is 60 mph, but think about it. Both cars going 30mph hit each other and stop dead, same as going 30 mph into a wall (ignoring crush factors and elastic restitution effects). Or it can be a 60 mph impact into a stationary vehicle of the same mass, where after impact they will both be going 30 mph in the same direction. It's all about change in velocity (delta-V).

Thanks, WnG.
The Zenith looks to have a later Raleigh crankset on it but in no way takes away from it. And a Schwinn Black Phantom, the holy grail for many bicycle collectors.
Went to a local car show today but was pretty disappointed in what I saw. Mostly variations on a theme, pretty paint and a 350. There was a stock 1964 VW convertible that was pretty sweet plus a stock 1954 Chevy 3100 pick up that made me long for my old 52 Chevy.
Too bad I left my camera at home, I think I might have had a bunch of guys drooling over the bone stock 1948 Harley Davidson. Even with its $8000USD price tag.

cheesy, I really enjoyed the AMC stories, like kato I owned a 304ci CJ-5 at one time. I also owned a Hornet, the original a Hudson Hornet with a 308ci and Twin H Power, that was back in my high school days.
Attaching a couple of photos from yesterday, that that Volvo was absolutely beautiful.
I stopped by the Honda dealer, the CBR250R is finally here $5000 in Peru, that's a lot less than I thought it would be there is no sales tax here, setup and freight charges are included in the price, I'm thinking, that it is close to the "out the door cost" at many US dealers

Not unique, just metric. BSC, which is the threading standard for most bicycles is 24tpi. Steer tubes are 1" x 24tpi, bottom brackets are 1.37 x 24tpi, pedals are 9/16 x 24". Conversely, older French bikes steer tubes are M25 x 1, bottom brackets are M35 x 1, and pedals are M14 x 1.25. Everything is just enough different so they don't interchange.

About eight years ago, my brother, my sister, and myself moved our folks from NE WI to NW WI, or more accurately, from the E end of WI hiway 70 in St. Germain to the W end of US 8 in Cameron, their idea of moving south. My brother and I were foisting curses up our father for every 5 gallon bucket of scrap lumber we lugged that Dad insisted on bringing with. The scrap made sense at the old place, kindling for the fireplaces in the house and the wood furnace in the garage. With the gas fireplace and furnace at the new place, not so much. When asked why we had moved this stuff, Dad said "You'll never know when you'll need a 6" piece of 1x2."
I told you that to tell you this.
While cleaning out the detritus of my garage, I came across a taped up paper grocery bag that had written on it in black marker, 'Save, June 83'. It was in my handwriting. My youngest was two months old in June of 83. I open up the bag and find a half dozen toilet paper tubes. No idea why I held on to them, or worse, why I moved them from the last place to this one 18 years ago. But I know where I get it from.

No question about it. You are right. :D
But I can't. I've hated winter since I was a puppy in NJ. :x
I remember riding into California when I moved there from New England many years ago. I smugly tought to myself I'd never have to go through the cold winter again for the rest of my life.
Idiot.
In the bicycling community, there is a saying. "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing choices." Wool and layers are my choices. Synthetics are blended in with the layers. Never cotton against the skin in the cold. Makes all the difference in the world. I have a Turtle Fur balakava that weighs in at a few grams and it's insulating properties are unbelievable.
Went out this morning with some buds on bicycles and it was 38F at the start. Within two miles, I was peeling off layers. Temp was in the low forties by the time we were finished. Other than my toes being a bit chilled because I left my booties in the truck, it was comfy.
That said, when the temps drop below 0F, the saying starts to be closer to BS. Then it's time for a fireplace and a single malt. The warm girl is optional.
I have bicycled at -25F, just to see what it was like. Bikes make all kinds of different noises you don't hear in warmer weather. I was quite comfortable. The bike, on the other hand, did not enjoy it. Snapped a crank arm off riding up the hill to the house.

Seeing Doc's wonderful pic of his bike got me to thinking of a shot I took a few years ago. I had an Indian built copy of a Raleigh DL1, the ubiquitous British Bobby bicycle. This bike easily tipped the scale at 75 pounds, and even with a three speed hub, she was a bear. That is, until you got off the paved roads and onto the road surfaces that the bikes loooonng wheelbase and slack angles were designed for. Then she was an absolute dream to ride.
This is in an area just a few miles from my place near the Fox River and the Fox River Bicycle Trail. It is an abandoned CN&W service road that ran along the rail line and is now used by guys like me and the occasional park district vehicle. Most people in the area don't even know it exists.

I no longer have the bike, it was sold along with a few others to finance the CX, but I still wander out to this area a few time a year just for sanity rejuvenation.

When I get into a jam like that, I shut off the bike and pop it into first to lock up the rear wheel. I then stand behind the bike and grab the bars, pulling the bike up onto the back wheel. That allows a pivot turn, so I just spin it around in the direction I need to go. It only works if you're on level grade or slightly uphill.

Is your partner's dog an otorhinolaryngologist? Apparently, she defers using an otoscope, and prefers a manual examination. ;)
Thanks for posting the nice photos, Bill. :D

John is a psychiatrist. Gracie is a therapy dog.
I'm gonna start bringing MTC to work. He can ride in my backpack. Therapy cat.

Golden Retrievers and similar breeds are wonderful dogs! :) You never hear of a Pit Bull serving as a "therapy dog."

I've also never heard of a Golden Retriever attacking a little girl. :?
With that said the owner has a lot to do with the behavior of the dog. However, genetics and instincts will always be a factor. A Lab or a Golden have much nicer, friendlier genetics and instincts.
As you once told me about Linda's idiot Shitzu dog, Spud.... She can't help who she is.

Couple of doggie pics from today.
My IGGY(Italian Greyhound) Dasher, looking up at our new grandson, wondering what all the fuss is about and does he taste like chicken.

Dasher is 15 years old and still a spry guy, although a bit hard of hearing. The high point of his day is 23h15m of sleep a day.
Trevor, not giving a hoot about the new baby.

Trevor is a 14 year old beagle/terrier mix. With Trev, we are watching a life wind down. He has congestive heart failure and has a couple of months left, at most. So we are doing our best to keep him comfortable. Still, he is utterly devoted to Mrs. C and meets her at the door with the 'My tail is a propeller' greeting. Me, I get a sniff.
Though not looking forward to it, it will probably very quiet at Cheesy Manor at this time next year.

What I've been messing with while waiting for the temps to warm up enough to get back to working on the Maggot.

On the bottom is an old tube style RCA Institute signal generator. On top is a early 70's Ross AM/FM/SW transistor radio. This was the first time I tried the signal generator just to see if it worked. It does, for the most part. Seems a bit weak on the shortest meter bands but it hasn't been gone through yet. Probably needs a recap.
And before WnG asks why I need a striker for radio repair, I had just finished these for a friend.

There were thirty women in the house for my kids baby shower and I wasn't yet ready to venture into the 'Land of Estrogen Overload'. So I started on the radios before I straightened up.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I wasn't going to ask. I just figured that your shop is almost as bad as mine is right now.
