There's an abandoned airfield out this way. It's eerily quiet walking around there. I really want to take a ride down to the Boneyard on Davis Monthan AFB in Tuscon. It's less than a two hour ride. Hopefully this fall when Nugget is a little older older.

Marin was way ahead of the times... back in 02, they were building 6" cross country/4x bikes when the rest of the world was still building 3-4" bikes... i had an 04 trek fuel that i never liked riding, snapped the rear carbon triangle and ended up picking that marin frame NOS off ebay for $200 and built it from the ground up...LOL :hehe: best bike i have ever ridden... and i have demo'd some serious 5k+ rides... they just feel dead... theres no action/reaction to me...

Marin was definitely at the top of the game when they built those bikes. A lot of companies followed their lead including Jamis. This is a pic of my 1st 6" bike. Jamis Dakar that I handed down to my son and he still rides it hard. It was built over 10 years ago which is considered old in the mtn bike world especially after what I put it thru

just something about razzing a trail on a well built single pivot isnt there? you can keep all the fancy multi link stuff and "brain" suspension (yes im talking to you Specialized) just give me a decent single pivot with decent shocks and i am happy.... you get to feel the connection to the trail unlike the new crud that takes all the guesswork out of it.... rode my buddies newer specialized, and it scared me... the threshold between in control and in a tree is a very VEEERRRRRRYYYYYYY fine line.... when it let go it let go completely.... not gradual and controlled like my bike....

The Mrs. and I have spotted a "BigFoot" (or cousin) in the wild one night driving back home from a late night working at the Black Cat/Pyro City Fireworks Store...

It's kind of hard to miss a 9+ foot tall, matted up fur ball crouching down trying to "blend" into the surrounding ditch as we fly past going 65 mph... we both said/asked at the same time "Did you just see that?!?"... and yes... we both did just see that :hehe:

Started a new project at my storage lot /camp this afternoon .I forgot to bring a wrench to tighten up the bolts ,and am a few bolts shy ,but the main frame is fairly close and the next time I am out there I should have it decked and floating
.The stringers are 15’ x 10” aluminum extrusions from a bleacher system the city used to have in the park .It will float on 10 plastic barrels for now ,and I have another 10 I can add if I think I need or want the extra floatation ,At 400 lbs per barrel I don’t think I will need anymore .You can see in the picture the other side of the river so I don’t need it to go far ,it’s only 100 ft or so across and my boat launch is right there .

what the heck is that mess?

What happens when someone who knows just enough about automotive DC to be dangerous. It’s the dash panel of a 1998 Geismar KGT4RS hi rail crane that I commissioned new. A relay fails, they bypass it. Scotchblocs everywhere. I replaced the alternator Thursday. They had a hole in the exhaust pipe that was blowing hot gas on the back of the alternator and cooked it. I had to work with what I had so I cut up a Coke can and secured it over the hole with mechanics wire. They tell me they have no manuals for the machine but I know better. Went in the supervisors file cabinet and pulled three new manuals, still wrapped in plastic, and slammed them down on his desk. RTFM!!!

I can have a very long rant about this certain place.

Three hour plane ride and a hour drive from the airport. I do like the people there but I have seen the place go farther downhill with every new iteration of Management. Part of the reason things are like they are is an onerous procurement system. As with the relay, instead of someone running down the street to NAPA and buying one with petty cash, they have to request the part through procurement. Procurement then runs their Vogon process which can take up to a year to get a $5 relay that ends up costing $75. So instead of fixing things correctly, they either jerryrig or do nothing and wait until I come back.

We have a similar system at GNA but I just bypass it to get the job done. I’d rather have a happy customer than a smug bureaucrat.

Prefer solder and heat shrink to Scotchblocs. Less headaches down the line.

I built this building myself from an idea. I've had no help except my girl handing me tools and holding things in position. I did the gable end siding on my building yesterday. I thought it looked pretty ok. Everything primed and pre-painted. Now it needs a finish coat, trim, soffit, and facia. Then onto the rest of the siding. Weather permitting I'll get a little more work done before dark today. Slow but steady progress.

Whats the purpose of the blocking in the walls ,is it because you are not sheeting the walls or ? We don’t do that around here either ,just the floors .

Our building practices are similar to Canada. Normally I would build the walls, sheath them with OSB or siding, stand them up, level them, run my top connector plate, and fasten them down. Then install the roof end trusses with sheathing or siding on them, run the center trusses, install the roofing, install the windows/door(s), and finish trim. When I started my building, they didn't have the siding I wanted at the time. It was on back order and eventually went NLA. Instead of waiting I started building with the intention of adding the siding before installing the roof trusses. Again, this was during the time the siding was on back order. I had yet to find out the siding would no longer be avaiable. So to stiffen the walls, I installed blocking before setting the roof trusses. The blocking can be removed once the siding goes up, or left in place. I consider the blocking a band-aid solution. If I would have had the siding to install, the wall would have been very stiff with little to no racking. I wish it would have worked out that way. I should have moved on and purchased a similar siding before building the walls. I got lucky and found this Brown Ind. knotty simulated ship lap engineered sheet siding for a good price. $22 a sheet with a 5% discount over 10 sheets. I needed 18 to finish the building. I think it shakes out to a little less than $19 a sheet with the additional 5% from using my credit card to make the purchase.

I picked up a nice winter job today ,gutting a 4 story home to the studs on the largest lake in the world completely surrounded by a city ,Ramsey Lake .Anyway home was new in 1996 ,just purchased for $1.5 million ,and we are doing a million dollar renovation gutting the home to the studs .Today I removed 4 stories of 1.5” thick solid oak stairs ,along with a ton of spindles and hand railing .The new owners must not like oak ,because we are replacing it all with real dark stained wood ,why not just restain the oak in a dark stain ? Everything is just like new ,the original owner was a single old Lawyer ,so honestly the home is in fantastic shape ,if you like oak .
Anyway here is a few very crappy pictures from the 4th floor down looking up ,and a few pics of the lake that had waves on it this morning at 7 when I arrived ,but is now ice and snow as far as I can see .I almost pissed myself when the new owner told me he wants to build a rink on the lake for the kids this winter ,nice dream buddy! It took me over an hour to shovel the outside stairs to the bottom level so we can move materials in and out ,and he would have at least that far to go again to reach the waters edge where he would have to deal with shovelling his rink ,he won’t make it the first time ,and will never try again ,I guarantee it l.o.l. .

I guess I inadvertently fibbed a little .Ramsey lake is no longer the world’s largest freshwater lake totally encircled by a city ,our city amalgamated with a bunch of others in 2000 ,and with that came another larger lake that is 20 minutes drive from the other one .I bet that is probably yet another record ,the two largest freshwater lakes totally encircled by a single city ,although there are hundreds more we can add ,some are very large so we might have the top 3,4, or 5 .You can swim in any of them ,and drink the water no problem as well .

Somebody from Texas asked about if the snow was cleared from the lake at the house I am working at ,if the ice would be smooth enough to skate on ,the answer is yes and no .sometimes when that lake freezes ,there is only cold temps and no snow ,so you can skate that entire lake with no problems and it’s smooth as glass ,but if it’s freezing and also snowing at the same time ,depending on the volume and type of snow that’s coming down ,the snow will turn into slush and freeze into the ice leaving bumps and a generally crappy surface .In that case ,you shovel off whatever you can ,then use a garden hose or drill a hole through the ice and use a gas pump and smooth it out that way ,although hot water is the best to use for this .
If you look at the picture I posted today of my camp you can see the water looks like glass ,if it froze today the ice would look exactly the same and be fantastic for skating .

A town of 103 people. I know some in Nor Cal know of our little haunt and have most likely visited at one time or another.
Most nights of the week (and guaranteed on weekends), many of us gather at the Country Store (built in 1853), for some cold refreshment and to "solve all the world's problems". We're a motley bunch but it's nice to end a day at the Salt Mines in our little fish bowl.

Felt like braggin on the ole girl tonight because I wasn't healthy enough to run her this season. This truck was literally a barn find. Our county commissioner bought it new for a hunting/recreational camper and drove it on weekends. The distributor went out and he parked it on the backside of his barn under an add on roof. The local trails took us right to the back of his place and we all wanted that truck every time we rode past. But the old man wasn't interested in selling it, and didn't mind firmly telling you so.

Well eventually he sold it to a young fella across the village, who put a distributor in it along with a tune up. Kid couldn't get it to run right and after a year gave up. I looked at the the truck, knew the distributor was a 180° out, and offered him 800 and a couple of cheap things that go bang. As soon as he handed me the title I asked for a wrench and 2 minutes later the thing was running great. Much to his disappointment ofcourse.

The truck came stock with a heavier 3/4 ton frame with additional cross members, 350 4 barrel, 350 turbo, bulletproof NP205 gear to gear cast iron transfer case, big knuckle Dana 44, and a 14 bolt Full Floater limited slip that's been a posi for many years. I then added an 8" suspension lift, no body lift ofcourse but I did replace all of the cab bushings. I gutted the wiring for the camper and installed a 5th wheel hitch. Spent $1800 in rims and 38" Swampers, and had a custom front driveshaft made for $300 because of the extreme angles.

This thing wins almost every event we take it to, and if not it places top 3. All my competitors think it's about horsepower, it's not. I'm running a 46yr old 350 that doesn't use oil and is extremely reliable, but it is beat, low compression etc. But that's my secret, a big heavy long wheelbase truck sitting on tall, relatively narrow tires that sinks to the bottom and just slowly lugs along. I beat them in slow motion but in this game distance is the goal. And mine is one of the few that is kinda street legal and can be driven to events.

And as far as reliability, most dependable best running truck ever. When we fired it up to pick up Jay's bike it had been setting for 9 months. Put a battery charger on it and poured a little gas down the 800cfm carb, varoom. The last couple years the bed rust has been getting worse, but the frame and running gear are beautiful.

OneLeggedRider
11-11-2019, 11:30 PM
The first 6 months the truck kept giving me fits with alternators, could only get about 6 weeks out of one. Then I figured out it came with a high amp alternator (because of the camper) and that's what it requires, no troubles since.

After years passing and the desire to build a bullet trap, and thanks to a fellow firearms instructor from western Idaho....who gave me the plans to make sure my angles were correct to the deceleration chamber....we built the prototype. (I had to look for the plans ive had, took me about a month to find where i hid them, and my older age didnt help either ha ha lol) We have been training some new concealed carriers, and our range is mud. Was nice to shoot in the shop, on concrete, heater purring in the background, and the shop door open for ventilation. the mrs and I shot 300 or more rounds at it.....WE DONT let a newbie shoot at it as we don't want any holes in the back of the shop! We shot at distances of 15 to 50 feet, no problems. Before xmas, sig sent an email for a .177, 1911 copy, pellet gun, one heck of a deal, never owned one, but great for training....then also a need for a trap. We were in a hurry to finish it so we could shoot, welded it with mig, bimix gas, from the little Miller we got last summer. Had my adopted son weld it....was like found the plans, yes, cut up some 1/4 plate, weld it, hope like heck the angle is right (it is)The son took the stinger away from me....dam kids anyway!
Yes I know my shop is in a turmoil as we just finished 2 huge projects that we started in Nov....and getting it slowly back to normal.

Gosh darn, wished Frank the onelegged rider lived closer, we would have him fab it and weld it, while we had some cold brews and watched a master fabricator at work!!!

jerry....that barn wood, would bring huge dollars in the northwest!!!! I couldn't even guess, but the last smaller barn that I saw torn down brought if I remember right ….$50,000.00 to $100,000.00 in old wood. of course there was tear down expense, and loading trailers to ship.

Repaired my Variac today(the blue thingy)so I wouldn't cook the Zenith. The old tube Zenith radio is rated between 85 and 117VAC, depending on whether running on batteries or mains(There's a switch). My wall outlets are pushing 120-123VAC.

I have the Variac putting out about 108VAC and the radio sounds better. I pushed it to 114VAC and the radio got a tad louder but didn't sound as good as at 108.

The Variac had a bum circuit breaker that was damaged when a cabinet fell off a wall in my old garage. I hadn't noticed the damage to it because I was sick that my NIB Simpson analog VOM had shattered in the mayhem. Anyway, the circuit breaker was a 4A push to reset Littelfuse 815 series that is long obsolete. Found a newer breaker that fit on Amazon. A little modifying here and there and we are good to go.

Yes, yes, and I agree about the seat. I thought I taught my daughter better. Then again, he ain’t four yet. Knowing Owen, he just hopped on it when his Dad pulled it down.

whitelightning-Going by the date stamps I found on the bike when I bought it, it’s from 1962 and we think it is a Phillips. And, yes, cable operated stirrup brakes front and rear. Owen didn’t even need to be told how to use them. He’s the third grandkid to start out on it.

The light on top of the mirror cabinet has been busted for something like two years and I`ve been rocking a screw clamp spotlight at the corner of the mirror, that gave up the ghost last night as well so decided it`s high time to DW. LED strip gifted from neighbor, old transformer off my treasure chest of salvaged parts, two sockets and a rod of stick on wire canal from hardware store. Overall cost a wee bit under a tenner, power drain a whopping 2.4watts.

Well, this really off the wall, I took this photo yesterday in a Lima, Peru market. This soothsayer was telling fortunes by using coca leaves. More bizarre, she claims to diagnose diseases by rubbing a live guinea pig over her clients. She kills the guinea pig, then examines the entrails, then tells the person what is wrong with them. Apparently people believe she is able to cure them of their ailments.

I don't believe PETA would approve. Perhaps if she asked the guinea pig what they thought... or maybe used a probe like those UFO dudes.

Barnone ,does your licence plate say Sanibel ,as in Sanibel island ?Yes it is as in Sanibel Island. We have a cottage there and lived on the island for fourteen years starting in 1974. Might moved back there one day. My wife and I were out there today checking on our daughter's house and was the island deserted. All the rental units are shut down. We were riding our bicycles for a bit and only saw maybe six other bikes there.
All the beaches are shut down. Me on the causeway with my TU250X. All the parking is fenced off.

In 1980 ,I worked at Epcot as a musician in the Canada pavilion ,I was there for 6 months and met a young lady that was from Sanibel island so I went to her parents home several times there on our days off .First time I saw houses on stilts that high ,and I still remember the orange juice ,you know when go outside pick an orange off the tree ,juice it and drink it ,there is nothing like it up here .
I had the time of my life as a 14 year old l.o.l. .
I remember a bunch of shrimp boats beside the causeway ,and her parents had greyhounds that raced around a little track ,all stuff I would of never seen in the dead of winter in Northern Ontario !

I think those shrimp boats were beside the bridge to Fort Myers Beach and at the shrimp boat docks is the bay there.
The Greyhound racing is going to over after this year as there is not that much interest in it anymore now with all the Seminole Casinos here in Florida.

That was a lot of years ago and you are probably right ,my memory isnt that good on 40 year old details . I do kind of remember crossing a relatively tall bridge so it’s possible that would be the shrimp boat area ,think they were down on the right heading to the island ?
Disney would send us to another little place about once a month or so to play a little concert ,Bueno Vista ? but I don’t know if that was it ,it was a fair distance from Epcot ,and I just remember some small brown buildings ,possibly log or wood siding ,I do think that was closer to ft Meyers but no idea ,and I don’t remember much going on there at all .

This is eldest grandson Eli. Eli has major smile pasted on his face. Why? See that fishing rod hanging from the tree. That’s mine.
Eli’s parents outfitted his rod with a weird “Kid Safe” hook and bobber. Poor kid couldn’t catch a cold with that set up, yet I was pulling in bluegills left and right. I changed him to a real hook and bobber. Told him to cast and he snagged my rod, that was lying on the ground behind him, on his back cast. It ended up in the tree in front of him.

First off, I am not a big fan of chicken. It was a five day a week thing as a kid and given a choice now, it’s low on the list. That said, this one was delicious. Free range chicken, so it was kind of small but, smoked for 4.5 hours with a mix of hickory and maple, along with a special dry rub Mrs. C concocted. If all chicken tasted like this one, I would have it more often.

Oddball Matt and JerryHawk250, what kind of vans were these? My co-worker had an Isuzu pickup that got to nearly 700,000km before he sold it. A lot of that was on slow dirt roads and with very heavy loads. He did a valve job once and rebuilt the diesel injector pump, but the bottom end of the engine was never touched. It was a 2.5 L with no turbo. Pretty much bulletproof, but completely gutless!

200...8? Fiat Scudo 90, 1.6L turbodiesel (I do believe the engine is a Ford Duratorq) also completely gutless, I mean need to pass check your calendar gutless :lmao: Also mostly on gravel roads, not that slow though as I'm a mailman. Lots and lots of starts and stops, wreaks havoc on them clutches and window mechanisms. Also note the distance is in kilometers (though that wasn't the point here) Has a valve tick that should probly get looked at but with rural mail delivery cars are a perishable commodity. The roads are at times mirror polished wet ice with not a grain of grit, one winter I visited the ditches EIGHT times of which three in the exact same curve, three consecutive days, in two different cars. Hell I'll see if I've stored any pictures somewhere, changed phones after that. Also have a Hyundai Santa fe awd for winter but that's currently in a shop getting a throttle pedal module replaced.

Fun fact for the murican users, the same exact van (with slightly different trim options) can be bought as Fiat Scudo, Citroen Jumpy, Peugeot Expert and Toyota ProAce.

That's impressive longevity for a mail van, Oddball Matt. The Ford diesels don't get much respect for longevity here in Africa, but sounds like some of them do great.

Before you suggest that she was scarred for life, her first question once the coaster stopped was "can we do it again before we leave?".

The picture was after the chain pulled us up the first hill and the steep drop caught her by surprise.

Sucks but figured since we're here might as well make the best of the situation, life and lemons and such...
