Oil fiters

Hi to all from Scotland.
I have a gasgas cami which uses the nc250 engine like the RX3.
As the bike gets a fair bit of off road abuse I change the oil around every 500 miles.
My question is regarding the oil filters.
The original filter is a reusable steel mesh.
I thought I would try paper filters as they usually give better filtration.
All the paper ones I have sourced, either from gasgas or genuine zongshen parts, only have a rubber seal at one end.
The steel mesh one has a rubber seal at both ends.
Now the filter chamber has an total internal length capacity of 105mm.
Steel mesh filter is 105.5 long so rubber seals compress 0.5mm to seal the filter in the chamber.
All the paper filters are only 104mm long so are not held tight in the filter housing as they are 1mm too short.
This will mean oil not passing through the filter and just passing through the 1mm space.
Just wondering what your thoughts were??

The rubber gasket this paper filter has, is in the inner side or the outer? If in the former, you could try adding an oring of the appropriate size between the external cover and the filter, after inserting it in its housing

In the RX3, the paper element is held tight in place by a spring.

Does your oil filter cover have a spring like this?

If so, the paper filter should be inserted gasket first, so the spring can push against the metal surface. The gasket will seal against the inner wall, preventing dirty oil from bypassing the filter. Oil from the sump enters the filter from the outside in and is sucked out the hole sealed by the rubber gasket.

I don't know why the mesh filter has a gasket on both ends. Is it open on both ends? Maybe it was designed to be used without the spring?

Mmmmmmm , no spring with mine.
Mesh filter outer end has a pressure bypas valve and the three machined faces, inside your spring, press onto the outer rubber seal.
So to use paper filters I will need to track down a spring.
Thanks for that.

I shall check out UK first, maybe AJP PR5 use paper or Honley dealer??
If not I shall be in touch.
Yamaha ttr250 raid I used to have used to have paper or mesh filters to choose from.
The consensus was that the mesh filters flowed a bit more oil than paper ones so we're more desirable.
Thanks again.
