That's awesome Jim! I didn't pick up on the fact that the trailer in the pic was hitched to the truck.

Yeah it was my first day backing them up like that, I've been doing mostly hauls to the concrete plants with just drive over hoppers, or transfer work where you drop the trailer to dump... Getting some more experience with them is always good :)

Doc that's very kind of you. I'll keep that in mind if I ever head down that way.

So I will admit I'm not too clear on my family tree, I'm not sure if he was my uncle or my dads uncle, we called him uncle Herb...

This is one of his planes, I'm not sure if this was the one he crashed in or the other one :( Apparently he had been to every US state with this one. I also saw an old news clip they had from a time he landed in a field and it had flipped over.

Jim,

That's still impressive. Like I said I can barely back a 53' anymore. Right now I'm driving a straight truck, but it pays the bills and allows me to be home.

Weldngrind,

That's what I was thinking, but now I know what Jim's talking about. Not as common around here but I see dumps with the extended arm pups running around here. Now I know why they have those long arms.....or at least I think that's the reason...correct me if I'm wrong Jim.

FastDoc,

Of all the things I've done.....some things I'll never forget and flying solo is definatly one of them. I know the song on the radio on the way to the airport ("I believe I can fly"..by R Kelly?...was actually one of them), I know the last words my instructor said, I remember every cloud in the sky, etc, etc.. It was neat, sadly I could never subside my imagination of worst case senerio, even though we had a close call during one of my flights with my instructor and my instructor (ex-marine) said "you shined when you should of been scared......and you scare when everything else is calm". FastDoc, I really admire your enthusastic energy and zest for machines.

I'll post up some pictures, I just need to find some good ones... There's a a few different setups... The reaches here aren't nearly as long as they are in the USA though, I think the length in the USA has to do with "bridge law"... I've never driven a commercial vehicle south of the border though so I'm not familiar with the regulations, I know they are different though.

With the length of the reach not being too long, and the second articulation point, the don't need to take corners as wide as a 53 footer.

Jim

This one is a truck and pony, I'm not certain why it's called a pony...
http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/pix/trucks/bc_trucks/2010/11-10/20101110_dsc_4726.jpg
The box dumps just like the truck box, so the driver dumps the trailer then backs the trailer to the side and dumps the truck. It only articulates at the hitch.

This one is a truck and transfer... It's good for getting into places that would be too tight for a truck and trailer, like a crowded construction site for one example...
http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/pix/trucks/bc_trucks/2010/11-10/20101110_dsc_4733.jpg
You find a place as close as possible, and preferably off the road (because municipalities like to give out tickets for "abandoning" a trailer), and unhook the trailer. When you go dump the truck, the air is draining from the brake pots that hold the reach up and it drops to the ground, so you come back and back into the front of the trailer, over the reach. Then you hook up some hydraulic lines and the trailer box goes in the truck, like this guy...
http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/pix/trucks/bc_trucks/2010/11-10/20101110_dsc_4727.jpg
(only not hooked up to the trailer). You go dump the truck again, then go back to the trailer and transfer the box back the same way. Pulled ahead, flip the switch to put air back in the reach, and then hook it up to the truck.

Locally I've seen 2 and 3 axle pony trailers, I've never seen a local 4 axle. That may have to do with the regulations. I have seen 4 axle pony trailers, but not here. The reason to use an 4 axle end dump like the one above/below, may just be so you can have an extra axle, and that may require the spacing between the axle groups... I'm not actually certain, I've seen 3 axle end dumps (with the spacing / articulation point), and 3 axle pony trailers. With the axle spacing you need the articulation point so you can turn.

Found a video of some local trucks transferring, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0wFxDTDhrA

Yea, that would be great to see and learn how that operation works. I've run a few end dumps (part time) but never dumps (besides chip dumps) so anything I can learn would be great. Likewise anything about logging, I'd be more then happy to try and answer although midwest logging is quite different then most logging operations since here it's more species specific with greater board foot prices, but much less production rates.

Yeah no problem... :) I like the transfer, though not sure why... My dad had a unique one for quite a while, he hauled 3 boxes, he transfered of the front, and the back of the trailer, but they changed the weight restrictions so it didn't make sense to do it anymore. It was a pretty cool trailer. It still operates with 2 boxes, but it looks like a piece of junk now, it hauls top soil which is lighter so that's why it gets away with the 2 boxes. Gravel is amazingly heavy.

I only mentioned the setups with the actual dedicated gravel trucks, they also use tractors to pull both single and double, side, belly, and end dump trailers.

I flew to Wenatchee, WA today to visit a friend. What a beautiful day! So clear, calm, and cold. Perfect flying weather! It was -20 at 7,500 feet. Even with the heaters going full blast it was chilly in the cabin.

Sorry about the prop interference. Camera phone pics...

The pics are the Wenatchee Valley and the Columbia River. Lots of snow there, none by me, thank God!

Love the mountain pics, BTW I was just checking out your city and wikipedia said your population jumped 100,000 people from 1991 to 2001? Is that right and if so what caused a 1000% increase in population in just 10 years?

FastDoc,
Cool pics.

From a famous movie that still can get me crying in laughter. "I thought the Rookies would be a little more rockier then this".........."Yea, that John Denver is full of ####".

Tokarev,
I bet that was a lot of fun. I've never been to any of the space museums but would like to go someday. There is a rest area on I-65 in northern Alabama with I think a giant Saturn Rocket. I can't remember what the actual rocket is, but it's just plain cool as heck to see in person.

Ok, that would make sense. The only thing I could think of was either it was a typo, or some kind of oil field production just opened up.

My family moved to Florida in 1969 - one of our first trips was to Kennedy space Center - I dont remember what year it was but there was an Apollo rocket on the pad waiting to launch. Back then all the early launch pads were intact. I visited KSC in 1976 - after Skylab and before the Shuttle started launching - then they gave tours in the vehicle assembly building and let you walk up and touch the vehicle transporter (the bigass tracted rocket mover).

Since getting married to a girl from New Orleans 20 years ago we have been driving past the sign to the Stennis Space Center never taking the time to stop. This time I made a point to visit Stennis. Neat stuff to see for sure.

Part of it is book keeping, that's for sure; Matsqui, Clearbrook and Abbotsford townships became the City of Abbotsford over 15 years ago. Since then, I've witnessed the area grow at an astonishing rate. We've increased in population by about 50,000 since the local airport was purchased by the city and expanded (a couple of times). Abbotsford is a beautiful area that is just far enough from Vancouver that housing is around the $400,000.00 mark for an older home in a decent area. You'd pay at least twice that in Vancouver. 8O

Abbotsford borders with Sumas, WA, and the local airport is international (the airport hosts a world-famous air show every year). Adjacent to the airport is the Tradex building, and it's used by Vancouver organizers for car and motorcycle shows, etc. Abbotsford is the ninth fastest-growing city in Canada, and it is the largest municipality (by area) in British Columbia. The local college achieved university accreditation status a couple of years ago as well.

My favourite feature is the amazing view of the North face of Mount Baker. Awesome. I love it here. :D

Look up an unmolested early 30's ford and see if that kinda looks like it to you. That would be my guess, but then again there are so many cars from that era that I've never even heard of. Cool pic, and good luck searching.

Thanks Lego.

I'm a big fan of Fords of that era, and I haven't found one that matches. Just when I see a cowl that looks sorta close, I notice the suicide door, etc. I'm familiar with the design differences between the early and late Model A's, and I know this car isn't a '32 (everything changed after that).

Short takeoffs and landings on rough fields are a Maules's primary mission. :D

If I'm light, have a decent headwind, on a cool day I'm airborne in less than 300 feet or so. Under the same circumstances, again depending on a lot of factors, I can have her down and stopped in a similar distance.

Probably just as well, there's nothing upstairs except an empty beer can, a couple ole magazines (you decide) thoughts of my friends and family, and the rest is just a void space..... :) :) :) Just kidding!

Back on motorcycles. Long story below,

Anyway, after getting a divorce several years back I ended up in an apartment (actually had more sq ft then my house I live in now). They didn't share my love of motorcycles because I kept them inside the apartment. Pic below is an 03 Buell. It was only about a year old when a guy backed into it and tipped it over. At first I thought that only the handle bar and and brake lever got damaged, plus there was a little scuff on the exhaust header. No big deal I thought, so I didn't turn it over to insurance. They guy bought me a new bar and brake lever and everything was cool, so I thought. Well about a month later I rode down to Big Bend National Park in SW Texas. From Big Bend to Alpine Texas it's about 100 miles of nothing so I opened it up and was cruising at a pretty good clip. Normaly, I could get about 110 miles on a tank crusing at a brisk speed. I had only gone 60 miles and the fuel light went on, plus I noticed it was running pretty poor. I pulled over to check the bike out. When running it was pouring out black smoke. Got a closer look and the header was barely holding on to the front head. One of the bolts was broken off and part of the head was cracked allowing fresh air to be rammed in there at high speeds.....consequently causing the oxygen sensor to think that the bike was running lean and therefore dumping fuel as quick as it could into the engine......causing the black smoke and severe fuel consumption. My guess is that when the bike got tipped over, the header pipe took most of the brunt and cracked at the head. Like I said from first site it looked like the pipe just got a little scuff. Anyway, I got a new head, and overhauled the top of the engine. The apartment manager wasn't to thrilled I was doing this inside the apartment, however I didn't get one stain on the carpet.

That's an amazing climb rate for such a long distance. The airport I used to go to had a annual party and one of the games was to see how many balloons you could pop with your airplane. During the game some of the planes could shoot up like that, but not nearly for that long........maybe a hundred feet or so before they would have to level off.

Dom Deluise was a riot.

The 'secret' to such a climb is to start with a high performance airplane, such as a Maule, and gut it of everything not legally required to fly. I would imagine 3 or it's 4 tanks were empty, and it was running off of 5 gallons or so in only one tank. Other factors would be as strong a headwind as they could find, and as cool a day (not too likely in Georgia in the summertime, probably shortly after sunrise) as possible.

My Maule and I have had a lot of fun with such antics. 8)

I don't know exactly what they've got going on there... It's most likely an 18 speed, Not sure about the hp and torque though. I don't even know what kind of weight they're putting on there, the normal max allowed in BC is 63K kg as far as I know, but there is no reason for that many axles then, so they must have permits to haul more.

FastDoc
01-23-2011, 10:56 PM
These are real pictures, before Photoshop, or PC's for that matter, even existed.

B.D. Maule, the creator of these fine airplanes, is demonstrating the fantastic takeoff performance of a Maule by actually taking off and flying in the hanger before he even reaches the doors! 8O

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v25/maule/Clears_the_hangar_b_w.jpg

The plane you can fly right out of the hangar! B.D. Maule shows the short takeoff capabilities of the Maule with this daring exit through the factory doors in the late 60’s.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v25/maule/Clears_the_hangar_color.jpg

And again, in the early 70’s, B.D. once again shows off the Maule’s performance. Mr. Maule was the only one who ever attempted this maneuver.

Side dumps aren't too common around here, more common is the end dump, or transfer trailers. They were testing out a new set of side dump trailers one day at the pit my sister works at and they rolled it over dumping next to the scale. I don't think I saved the pictures she sent though.

Runway......pfff.....who needs a runway....it's like a VSTOL?

As far as the Western Star semi truck. Anymore they pretty much just run Detroit motors since they are owned by Freightliner, which right now Detroit offers a 15litre with 560hp and 1850lbs of torque. That looks like a 90's or early 2000's Western Star so it could have a Detroit, Cummins, or Cat motor so I could have a 600hp 2050ftlb engine in it. Having said that it could have an older 425 hp /1450ft lbs Cat 3406b in it.
Most of it's in the gearing. Some of the 10,13,18 speed trannys have 12-14 to 1 low gears in them and the 8LL and 15 speeds have 16 to 1 low gear in them. Final drive would probably have an additional splitter on it so it would be something like a 4.33/5.88 split. The truck might have a pumped up engine in it, but most times the pumped up engines put out a lot more horsepower but not much torque gain. Either way a 500hp engine putting out 1600lbs of torque would work as long as the gearing is there.

1600lbs times a 16.1 first gear would be 25600lbs then going thru a split diff at 5.88 would be 150528lbs of torque at the wheel. More then enough torque to propel 150,000 lbs up to 45mph. If additional speed is nessasary then a taller diff would be needed hence the need for a splitter. A 4.33 rear end with a .80 top gear spinning at 1500rpms with 24.5 tires would get you somewhere around 55mph.

Jim
01-23-2011, 11:25 PM
I'd imagine they've got more weight on then that though, although it's just a guess. With a tridem truck and 4 axle trailer they pull 63K kgs, this has 5 more axles. I'd imagine it's over 90K kgs? That of course is just a number I pulled out of the air.

Oh yea, I'm sure it probably is more weight, likewise I just threw out 150,000 for lack of knowing. Heck I've hauled over 100,000lb in a standard road truck with 34k tandem rears, 3.55 rears and 15" clutch, however if a guy did that constantly, I'm sure the rears tranny, clutch and the rest of the drive line wouldn't last long.

The pic was taken in the mid 90's in Oklahoma (central US). They did that with a couple other speed limits. Like 45mph was now 47mph, 35mph was now 37mph, etc, etc. It was there to get your attention and at the same time it was kinda like their way of saying we will let you slide a little but go 53mph in a 52mph zone or go 38mph in a 37mph zone and you were getting a ticket, "no if's, ands, or but's" about it.

When I was growing up my father or one of the neighbors would paint the stop sign, the road sign, and the fire hydrant every couple years because the city was slow to do it and because they didn't mind doing it to keep the neighborhood looking clean. Today, that would be a lawsuit waiting to happen.

FastDoc,
There was a guy at the airport that had a pretty beat up early 60's Mooney. He had a racing seat from a car bolted in then the other seat was just a lawn chair bolted down into the floor with u-bolts. I guess it was kinda like a poor man's hot rod of the air. I never saw it fly but from what the airport owner said, this Mooney had a hopped up engine and actually flew pretty good. The avonics were either missing or INOP and I guess it hadn't had any annuals done on it in years. It had like five different colors on it from where it had been put together by other mothballed planes and I don't even think it had a tail number on it.

I like the Toy Alert. I would love to get nice pop up. That looks sweet.

I agree with Weldngrind....no food in bear territory. I've only met a couple Black Bears in the Rockies but one night I came across one that kept pushing into my tent with his/her nose snorting all around and then he/she was banging the heck of the bear box that I had my food stuffed in. The next day I looked at the bear box and it's sides were pushed in.....that's a heavy duty 50cal ammo box. It's amazing how much power they pack and this was a little 300lb black bear.......I can't imagine dealing with anything bigger. I didn't sleep at all that night.

We bought a pop up last year and love it. The previous owners were teachers that had summers off. I think they went to all the states west of the Mississippi. One thing they mentioned was that they always cooked with the stove on the outside. they were very careful not to get a food smell in the camper. We really do enjoy it.

Congratulations!

Nice toy! Any accessories with it, or is it simply for sleeping? Personally, I'm fine with cooking outside; there's logic in not making your trailer smell like a giant piece of bacon to a bear.

Stove, 3 way fridge, 20K BTU furnace, water pump, power roof vent, couple of smaller fans for each pull out bed, awning, outside stove shelf, electric lighting and a voltage inverter.

I'm all for outside cooking, got something like 40 campstoves. I'll keep an extra Coleman 425 stored aboard so I don't have to disconnect the propane stove and bring it out.

My folks had a Skamper Kamper pop up in the early seventies and that thing was towed all over the US and even got dragged to Sioux Lookout, ONT. I would have liked to buy it from my folks but I didn't have a suitable tow vehicle at the time. Don't think a 75 Civic would have been up to the task.

Mrs. Cheesy hasn't been too keen about sleeping on the ground since the kids were born. We tried inflatable Thermo-rest pads when did the Nat'l Park trip in Alberta last year. They were somewhat better than a foam pad but things got a bit damp and, Mrs. Cheesys' view, if it's damp and crappy outside you're just as uncomfortable in a tent. Tried an inflatable queen size mattress this year and found that to be much better. But again, crappy outside, uncomfortable inside. So, we bought the pop up.

MICRider

Yeah it's actually nice... It shows the station and the time... I don't know why it's so rare to see the time on the radio, the one in my Peterbilt won't show the time unless you use the remote control which I threw away. The stereo in the older KW I was driving had a tape deck.

This KW is just before the burners came with them, the 2 newer trucks both have them... I've driven them a few times, one of them occasionally leaves a big trail of smoke. I'm glad I don't have to deal with those when they go in regen mode.

If you can view the pic in your phone, chances are you can drag it onto your computer. If you have a cable that connects your phone to a USB port, see if you can find the phone in Windows Explorer (assuming a Windows OS). You can then cut and past it into your hard drive and go from there.

Very nice Pete! I like it.

This is a truck I'm looking at, but just at the looking stage. I've got plenty of contacts from some mills out of the ozarks to keep me busy year around with "ok" rates, but I have custody of my son every other week so that kinda makes it hard when school is in. I would be hauling hardwood lumber and logs out of the Ozarks, being home most nights. The guy has two of these truck spec'd the same for around 35k US dollars. I think it's a 03 model, 14l 515 detriot, 4.10 gears, 18 speed, 16k fronts, 46k rears, full lockers, 70gallon, two line PTO....I need a four line for running a grapple but that shouldn't hard to convert...I think. They are freightliners which nobody seems to like, but I've been around them for years and know the FLD platform like the back of my hand.

Well to be honest I absolutely love sportbikes, specially new ones that go up to 200mph, but also I'm young, love adrenaline and don't really understand the dangers of going 200 mph :P another thing is that sportbikes are like practicing a sport, they are fun to go ride on sunday for a 200 miles ride with nothing to do. If you use it for a everyday life, they are uncorfortable, tireing and not practical at all. But still love them :)

/\/\ Thanks.

I've had two of the 900rr in the past and really liked them. That bike was slightly modded and put out about 120hp to the rear wheel and had good torque. I've ridden some of the 04 and newer 1000cc bikes and to be honest, I can barely ride them in the first two gears. They are just to fast for me. I would like to test ride that newer Yamaha with it's 180 degree firing rate. I guess it's a lot more smoother and power is much more predictable. Eitherway I can't afford another bike.

Lego, thats a nice looking truck, I like Freightliners, I think if I was going to buy a truck, it would be a pete or a freightliner... You're right though I don't think they hold their value because people don't seem to like them.

Nice bike and great picture too :)

I read the link that you posted JIM, and there are 2 things she did wrong that are big time rules for me when riding a sportsbike : never ride as a passenger :P and never ride without protection. I allways go out with helmet, gloves and vest. Still got to buy the shoes and pants for riding though :) Learn that from my dad, he had a Honda Four back in 86 and he got into an accident, he spent 2 months in the hospital.

I found another fun video from those guys in alaska with the Yamaha Big Wheels. This is well worth 5 minutes to watch. I can just picture Wild Alaskan out there on his 400cc Honda/Lifan Snow Rat! :P

I looked at several of the videos the other day and enjoyed all of them.
They even had a plane in one of them that had a really short take off.

Check out the classified section on NESBA or Sportbike Track Time for some used pants and boots. Often times it's good, name brand, track legal stuff (360 zippers, knee puck area, toe sliders, etc) at half the price. Also don't forget a back protector....it's an often overlooked critical piece of gear that IMO is the second most important piece of protection. Take care.
