From last Saturday, it was getting a little hard to see by the end of the day.

Those are real nice trucks Jim. Here is a pic of Devils Tower in Wyoming. My son and I went to see Devils Tower, Mt. Rushmore, and Crazy Horse a couple winters ago. I have been up and down I-90 and across hwy212 hundreds of times but never could get out of the truck to see them. It was well worth the wait and on my birthday too. We were the only ones at the park that day. Of course the "Close encounters" theme kept playing in my head the whole time we were there.

Neat pic Lego!

Jim that looks COLD!!!

Do you ski or snowboard?

Jim

Weld, we took the green chair all day and it wasn't busy, when we went in the lodge around lunch it was packed though. I'm not sure how the other side of the mountain was. I don't think it was too bad though, but there was a group up there.

Lego, cool picture :)

Doc, I snowboard I don't think I can ski... I think I would twist my ankles..

Jim, your Mom's car was awesome. My first car was a 70 Camaro. It was cool but didn't have the same appeal as the late 60's Camaro's. Likewise, I love that scenery up there. It's beautiful.

BDIAgencies,
Ask that question in July, and I'd probably take you up on that :D
I wonder how much weight is on that roof. That's incredible.

BDIAgencies
02-21-2011, 01:14 PM
Well according to the "Experts"...the engineered trusses can hold up to 9 feet of snow....how much weight that is, is untermined...

The cause for concern was that it was forcasted that it would be +5 and rain(which it was)and the extra weight caused by the rain...

Pretty wicked...If we get a fast melt then we are hooped as it wouldn't drain fast enough into the lakes, streams and rivers....

That's a sweet '67 Jim. I'd love a '68, but the '67 is my second favourite.

From another thread. Just to give an idea of a typical task that I have asked my p/u truck to do over the last decade. This is a 14' veneer Walnut log weighing about 2800lbs. Most of the time I don't keep logs from tree jobs but if I can throw in a good veneer Walnut, Oak, or Black Locust log along with some gunstock logs then it's profitable to do so....assuming they actually pay me, which in this case I got paid for the gunstock logs in the background at .80 cents a board foot but never got paid on the veneer log which in this case is worth about 200/400 dollars on my end...... :x Anyway I have learned over the years that I can skid about 2500lbs without cradle on fairly dry dirt, and about 4000lbs if I cradle the front with chains so it doesn't dig. This pic I took because I normaly use a grapple or loader to load logs that big, but in this case I used two floor jacks and a come a long to get the logs up on the trailer. It went surprisingly well  Also kuddos for the often forgotten 1990 Hull trailer that has performed wonderful over the last TWO decades. It's rated for 7,000lbs and I have used all 7000lbs many times hauling logs and scrap metal over the years. Frame doesn't flex and it trails straight as an arrow.

Weld, I'm not sure I didn't think it was a 67 but I'm not an expert on the matter so I could be wrong.

Lego, that looks like a good load for that trailer. :)

Barnone

lego,
That log load reminds me of the time I loaded my trailer up with Poplar logs to haul to the saw mill. I was using my little John Deere 4100 to pull the trailer and lost control going down my steep drive way in WNC. Almost lost the rig because I could not stop it. Learned my lesson and used my Dodge 2500 diesel after that.

Does anyone veneer Locust?

I don't know my tractors very well, so I had to look up the John Deere 4100. Nice tractor. While I don't have much experience, I've had a couple frightful moments useing tractors and backhoes 8O
My brother has a Dodge2500 with a diesel in it, those are very nice.

Not so much in recent years, but in the past there have been a couple mills that will take Black Locust and actually pay pretty decent. I don't know if they actually used them for veneer but they only would take veneer qaulity logs.

The '67 was the only year to have vent windows. It's the easiest way to distinguish it from a '68.

I think or guessing these mills cut them for custom decks down at the Lake of Ozarks, but I could be wrong. Next weekend I'm doing some volunteer tree work on the Ozark Trail in southern Missouri. There will probably be some loggers down there that know the mills a lot better then I do. I'll ask them why they want veneer logs.

lego,
Ever find out what they use veneer quality Locust for? I'll ask some WNC loggers and saw mill owners when I head up that way in May.
Like I said I have to do some logging this year to keep my Forest Stewardship Program active.

No, the volunteering project down in the Ozarks that I was supposed to go to last Saturday was postponed due to flooding creeks. However, I was searching around on a Arborist web forum a couple days ago and someone there also mentioned building decks out of it. I'm guessing they just want the longest, straightest wood free of defect, so they ask for veneer qaulity. I know some mills won't touch it because it's hard on equipment, kinda like Osage Orange (hedge).

I can't remember what it paid but I wanna say around .80-1.00 a board foot is what they would pay me. I have not a clue what the mills got out of it if they re sell it and don't want to know either as it would probably just make me depressed :( Some of the State Universities have annual or quarterly updates on log prices, but it's never what I get out of it.

You must be in a dry climate for that Pierced Steel Plank ( I had to Google to get the correct name aka PSP Mat) to survive that long.

Don't underestimate the osage orange - good straight sticks 7 to 8 foot long and four inches diameter plus are worth a bit to traditional bowyers. They like it green, just seal the ends in wax. You can often make more money looking at value-added purposes like musical instrument making and bow making.

As an aside, I had what we call a 'stationary engine' here, a single cylinder Lister running a belt-driven cement mixer and a generator for a couple of years before we got power up. When a mechanic took it down for maintenance before selling it on, we discovered the piston was carved from a block of red gum (a local timber sometimes trees of 2000 yr age). It had worked flawlessly for two years I know of.

That's pretty cool. I'll have to check out Red Gum. One of my Parents friends is great with making small wood working crafts such as cars, working padlocks, and even a hand mixer for the kitchen with working gears made out of wood. He's always showing my exotic pieces of wood that he buy's from around the world. Some of that stuff he shows me doesn't even feel like wood.

Like you said there are some bow makers and fence post people that will take Hedge but otherwise seems like most mills around here won't touch it, nor will loggers. While I lack the connections, I personaly have never been able to make a dollar off of hedge other then for firewood. I only use a maul to split firewood so somtimes it's more work then it's worth. Plus most of the people I sell firewood to are people in apartments or homes that only burn wood for aesthetic reasons and don't know or care whether it's cottonwood or osage orange. Matter of fact most of the people I sell to would probably rather have cottonwood just because it throws out a better looking flame. Most of the homeowners that burn for actual heat either cut it themselves or buy cords of wood from guys that have the equipment to split in that volume. I have a lot of respect for the Osage Orange and if I was a tree, it's what I would want to be. Regardless if it's female or male, the tree will make you draw a little blood climbing it, but then it will allow you to tie into the smallest of limbs....even dead. It's as tough as nails, disease tolorant, prickly, obnoxious, hard on saws, makes a mess of yards, and even after you kill it, it will last a century just standing there. It's just a tough ole tree.

Blimey Andrew, you post bits and pieces all over the place in different threads, we cannot keep track of you! And now I see you finally sorted it all out and got out for a run at long last?

Wherever did you post that bit of information and what about how you fixed the carbie? Don't tell me I've got to hunt through all the different forums to find them?

Whatever, very good to see you are mobile and hopefully happy!

That is a really cool little tractor. 8) I bet it pulled, um, like a tractor with that diesel. Sorry, that's all I could come up with.

Looks like that tractor event was a lot of fun. I'd love to get involved in the local tractor club, but it would mean owning one. Mrs. Weldangrind would not approve.

It is really a cheap hobby. I have very little invested and the girls like it. I think I forsee a diesel swap on the sears. The JD was nice, but I don't like the drive systems on those.

Build cost was 1.5 China bikes.

Can't beat those old Schwinns, especially if they are the old electroforged Chicago built ones. In a battle between a brick wall and an electroforged Schwinn, my money is on the Schwinn.

First, dump shopping and dumpster diving. Drag home a beater and save all parts that are in decent shape or salvageable. Bikes from the forties to the early seventies used many of the same components.

Swap meets are the next choice. With a lot of people looking for the latest CF doodads, 'common' old parts can be had cheap. Rare is rare and expensive no matter what you deal in. A Sturmey Archer AW 3 speed hub was made by the gazillions so are plentiful and cheap. A Sturmey ASC 3 speed fixed gear hub, on the other hand, will be at least three bills. More if it has all the bits. Atmospheric, if it is NOS and in the original box.

Garage sales come third, only because it's rare to come across parts. Complete bikes, on the other hand, are easy and usually cheap.

Ebay is my last choice. I have a self imposed spending limit of twenty bucks, including shipping, on ebay. So that limits me. I also like to physically hold what I'm buying. That said, the Ross that I'm working on now was an ebay purchase. It was a local pick up and was all of $11. I got more invested in paint.

Cables and such can still be had at the local bike shop.

My neighbor repairs garage doors. He was dumping all the broken springs and openers in a dumpster that was out of his way. Now he just sets it off on the driveway for me. Free money for me, hours of time saved for him.

I separate the electric motors and the copper wiring out. Some of the openers have aluminum rails. I pull them. He needs the gears from some of the openers to repair older units. I pull them and he can pass some savings along to a customer who would otherwise have to buy a new opener.

I have been green before green was cool. Redneck, the ultimate recycler.

Doc, My system has adjusted to the Peruvian street vendors, I still carry cipro with me when I travel but have only used it once in the last year. Antibiotics like almost all drugs are sold over the counter, it's crazy, you know the ramifications of that a lot better than me. Talking about antibiotics I should mention this, http://www.livinginperu.com/news-14525-health-perus-ministry-health-confiscates-20-tons-fake-medicine-between-2007-2010 if I need a drug I go to a hospital pharmacy.

Weldandgrind & Spud,
The "rings" are called picarones, the main ingredients are flour, camote ( a type of sweet potato), cinnamon and sugar. They are covered with a syrup and served warm. They originated in Lima but are sold all over Peru. It is hard for me to pass up a picarone stand.

Papa rellana's are actually stuffed potatoes, the recipe's vary throughout Peru. The traditional Lima papa rellana is filled with chopped beef, boiled egg and black olives, they are usually served with a drink called chicha morada. The main ingredient in chicha morada is purple corn (corn Inca), with pineapple and lemon. A papa rellana/chicha morada cost three soles at most places, about one dollar US.

Yep, the pony's were crap with the points ignition but the excel was quite good, i only did a clutch at 80k and a timing belt at 90k, i had to weld the muffler back on numerous times as we used to baja with it in the gravel pit behind the old shop i used to be at, lots of fun, good on gas and i had a rocking stereo system in it.
I will admit i had to put a bit of oil down for that smoke show as burnout's in 1st gear weren't cutting it, that was a 2nd gear burnout in the pics, here's the small puddle of oil and lots o rubber down.

Doc-That is the remains of special sliding clutch for a Sturmey Archer AW 3 speed hub. I have used these for years in my AW hubs that are converted to 2 speed fixed gear hubs without a problem. The forces on the clutch are much greater with the fixed gear hubs than on freewheel hubs. That said, this particular clutch, in a freewheel hub, didn't last 50 miles. :( This happened to my daughters bike.

I sent pics of the clutch to the guy who makes them for me and spoke with him over the phone this morning and we are both of the mind that there was either a flaw in that hunk o' A2 steel or the tight tolerances in the clutch and the sloppy loose tolerances in the later AW hubs didn't like each other.

He was only doing 30 kmh in a 100kmh zone. Suicide! It was just at sunrise and it made his speed hard to judge, but I never thought I would see someone (except a tractor!) doing 30 kmh on the highway, when I passed him you could see the light from his phone screen on his face since he was holding it on the top of his steering wheel. Moquegua Peru, this is fairly typical Peruvian moto shop, I was really surprised to see the T-21 and Allstate. Allstate's (Jawa) were actually sold in Peru, the Triumph must have been imported or possibly sold by a traveler.

If there is no oil UNDER a Brit bike there is likely no oil IN a Brit bike. Believe me it RAVAGES my sense of OCD to have a bike that leaks oil!!!

I carried a catch tray in the trunk of my mercedes. Parked during the day. Pour it back in for the drive home.

Thanks for the pics. What a great shop!

I appreciate the lines on that Allstate; a lot of effort went into that design.

However, I don't understand why any mechanic would install the front wheel on a motorcycle without the tire mounted! 8O
