That's how I balance my wheels, too. Find the heavy spot on the rim alone and mark it, then align with the light spot on the tire (usually identified with a paint spot) before adding any weights.

This belongs to a young man whom I run into at work occasionally, and he's quite pleased with his car. It's not my thing, but I appreciate the engineering; the doors use the stock strikers and hardware, but the hinge is replaced with a bolt-on unit. The doors open conventionally for a few inches, and then they swing up.
Please excuse the poor phone pic.

I've seen this Volvo truck in my neighborhood several times, the owner uses it to haul construction materials, it is absolutely beautiful. I'm trying to sort out a new camera, went over tonight and got these shots.

Amazingly beautiful bike!
The BritBikes make up in looks, feel, and character what they lack in engineering and build quality. That Triumph is a triumph in asthetics.
Interesting that since BSA owned Triumph I see a number of bits on that bike that are the same as mine. Like the taillight, horn, carb, airfilter, control bits and some other parts.

The folks are doing pretty good for a "couple of old farts pushing 80".(What my Dad told me last night)
Mom was driving but has no recollection of what happened. Dad had been snoozing and said he woke up in time to see the ground coming towards him.
The accident reports says 'Wind Gust' and that's what we'll stick with but Dad and I are thinking something in the suspension of the trailer failed. They were heading west bound on I94 just west of Alexandria, MN when it happened. When the dust cleared, the pickup was on it's roof with the grill pointing east and the trailer was on it's side with the tongue pointing northeast. Spun pretty much a 180.

A pic of some of what I'm doing down in here Florida, in August. :( (the 3 hour plane ride I mentioned in another post)
I commissioned the machine this master cylinder came off of thirteen years ago. In the intervening years, little in the way of maintenance has been done. This MC has the piston rusted in place, and worse, it is in the compressed position.:x The brass jobber is something I cobbled out of various bits and bobs to inject grease into the cylinder to free the piston. It took two tubes of grease through the grease gun and two sets of arms but the piston popped loose with a loud Kkerackk. :)
After all that, the MC turned out not to be rebuildable. Going to take a month to six weeks to get a replacement from Italy and I still don't know what the wheel cylinders look like.
The customer wants it usable Friday. I don't freakin' think so.

You may have noticed I implemented a sale at the car lot...
 I missed that the first time around...
It is currently 20 deg F outside, but we are supposed to get more rain tomorrow. No snow for us, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
There is something truly beautiful about a fresh snowstorm, but I wish it would disappear within 24 hours of falling.

Well my daughter just got her N on Momday, passed first time and then the next day my wife got her to start friving her brothers to school.
(Here in BC you get an L for learner for 1 year, then you get an N for novice which is a 2 year probationary license which you are watched and can have easily revoked, then you can do one more written and road test to get your full license. MAJORLY STUPID in my opinion. I got my full license 1 week after getting my learners and I was fine.)
There's a knowledge test to get rid of the N now? I believe that the graduated licensing has resulted in safer roads, statistically, though I could be wrong.

I think I would have to go with Jim on this one. Too many kids are handed a full license at 16 and do not have any driving experience.
In Iowa I was fortunate to start driving on the farm at 7 with tractors. Moved into a yard truck by 10. 4 speed transmission. Manual choke. 3 out of 4 cylinders worked. You needed to be able to do alot at one time to keep it running.
Age 14 you got a permit to drive with a parent of immediate family member over 21. At 16 you got a full license. I drove all I could in those 2 years. Including towing trailers to Colorado and Michigan. Blew a tire on the van at 65mph with a loaded trailer. I slowed it down and eased it onto the shoulder. No drama. Lost the brakes on the 74 power wagon with a tandem load of wet oak. Dropped it in low. Got it stopped on the shoulder. Both happen with my Dad in the passenger seat. He instructed me what to do. Fortunately cars are better and stuff like that doesn't happen as much.
Anyway. I support a graduated system.

I was driving tractors and 5 ton trucks around 10 on my friends farm just down the street where we lived in Chilliwack, in haying season we even had his dad out front on the big tractor with large trailer of hay, then Gordie on the small tractor with hay and I had the 5 ton flat deck truck because I was taller than Gordie and could reach the pedals easily and we would drive from the one farm field back to the barn about 1 mile away on the roads and police saw us all the time and thought nothing of it. Maybe were going like 15MPH but I really knew how to drive by 16, kids now days are afraid to go drive and tons do not get their license until way later because of it.

I drove very early as well, including moving vehicles across town for my Dad when I was around 12 (I was very tall for my age). The '71 Mark III Lincoln was my favourite to drive. :D
That said, I know how most of my city friends were after getting their licenses, and they were scary. I'm in favour of the graduated license program for several reasons, not the least of which is that any trace of alcohol in your system is enough to have your "N" revoked.

If you guys like I can continue posting pictures as we make progress on it. The tank comes back in a couple weeks which will be really exciting. The seat is original it was sent to a guy an he added a tiny bit of foam to add to the spring but the leather was from a forum for triples. We are going for 100% stock original. Most of the parts on the bike have just been cleaned with in an inch of their life, zinked, polished, powder coated, etc. like I said earlier just been a great experience, I cannot wait to ride the bike (again) that sparked my love for motorcycles.

I have to say, I like the picture and cool project, but prius's entitled? Perhaps misguided? But entitled? I think the idea we can just pollute and take whatever we want from this planet is more entitled than trying to make less of an impact with a hybrid car. I am not trying to personally attack you, but I just don't understand the generalization to prius's?
Weldangrind
05-06-2012, 02:01 AM
I'm not going to answer on Enduroadventure's behalf, but I'll throw in my two cents. I've certainly heard people say that one should drive a Prius because it's less harmful to the environment, but that's a small part of the picture (IMHO). I've read that a Prius has a larger carbon footprint than a Hummer, largely due to the distance that the raw materials must travel. On top of that, a large portion of the electricity that is produced in North America is from coal fired plants.
I'm not saying anything that you don't know, Jim. I just get annoyed by people who are self-righteous about such things without doing the research. That does not imply that we are entitled to pollute as much as we wish.
All that said, I do think that there is a future in hybrid vehicles, but the electricity issue concerns me.
That's why I said I think they may be misguided, but I do not understand the use of the word entitled. What are they presumed to feel entitled too?
Enduroadventure
05-06-2012, 04:02 AM
It has nothing to do with people who drive prius's/hybrids in general just California people in particular who drive prius's/hybrids and think they are better but pollute in more ways than a guy who drives a truck, but builds houses out from recycled materials. It's just about keeping your own carbon foot print down, in other ways besides driving a certain car. its a lifestyle not a transportation issue. i do agree with Weldangrind on the burning coal issue most of the people i know this hybrids and electric cars use less gas and are there for more green, when i reality the electricity they use is burning coal like weld said. there just needs to be a happy median between consumption and use. I was not attacking anybody in particular but just tired of hearing false information from bay area hipsters who just say less gas is better. sorry for getting people riled up where he to talk about our bikes, which by riding we are doing good for the environment. enjoy the South Park interview below.

To address the idea of 'entitled'.
It's not quite the word I would have chosen but I understand where he's coming from. I may have used the word 'smug' or 'arrogant'.
It may not be the same in BC, or even my area of WA for that matter, but in much of California the Prius is a status symbol of sorts. A visible ticket of admission to The Cult Of The Green.
As others have pointed out it is not an environmentaly friendly vehicle, but that has nothing to do with SOME OF the people who drive them.
Of course it's a decent vehicle. It's reliable, I presume safe and comfortable, and indeed gets good mileage. As long as your inside it you don't even have to see how bad it looks on the outside.
BUT if a person wanted to save money on gas they should buy a generic little Ford or Toyota or whatever. The 50% premium for the Prius would buy 50,000 - 100,000 miles of free driving.
It has been a while since I've done the math on this, it may be different now 8) .
IF a person wanted to 'save' the environment the scientific answer would be to buy a similar but USED and OLDER car as it's materials have already been extracted and processed.
IF a person wanted to save the world, they should consider taking up a more feasable pursuit.
IF a person wanted to save himself, he (or she of course) should study the Word and accept The Lord into his heart.
With that last styatement in m ind, the other details don't seem very important, don't they?
Oh wow I have sure sidetracked this topic.
Anyways to respond, no one has argued my point though they've still disagreed with me, so I take it I was right in saying that entitled was the wrong word. Entitled does not fit the description anyone has made of why they don't like prius's. Like I said, perhaps misguided, perhaps hypocritical (we are all hypocrits).
As for riding bikes because it's better for the environment, I believe to be false, because from what I have read, even though bikes get better mileage, they are held to lower standards and pollute more per mile driven than most cars.
Alternative energies are a good idea, in Ontario there is a company that will install solar on your house for free, and the excess energy is fed back into the grid. You get paid for it. Alternatives are not nonviable, it's all just a money game, where can they make the most profit, changing systems isn't something they're interested in when they control the fuel supply already.
I agree doc, an old used car that gets good mileage probably is better environmentally, as is walking or biking when possible (which is also enjoyable and good for you).
I don't think this is an issue about saving the world, the world will sort itself out in the end. It will win, it is about saving ourselves. Climate change and pollution pose some serious threats to humans.
I wonder why it is harder to believe in the science behind climate change than it is to believe in talking snakes?
The other details do seem important. A lot of people are going to suffer and die. It's not irrelevant.

Couple new pics.
1910 Gray hit n miss engine.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/bikamper/2012-04-30181455.jpg
I got this in the mid sixties and showed it until the mid seventies. It went into storage, as it were, after I got married. Last year, my Dad asked if I was going to do anything with the collection of iron(there were about ten engines). Told him he could do what he wanted with them. So, he made a new fuel tank for the Gray and I wired up the ignition last Monday. It fired up on the second spin of the crank. Not too bad after sitting nearly 40 years.
This is something my Dad bought for my oldest in 1979.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/bikamper/KittyCat.jpg
The 1972 Kitty Cat cost my Dad $150 in 1979. It went through both my kids and then my brothers four kids, ending up back at Dads. Now that Dad is a Great Grandpa, he took the Kitty Cat down to the tub and rebuilt it for my granddaughter, who probably won't see it until November.
I can't wait to see my daughter and son in law get their faces dragged through the snow when the mini kid cracks the throttle wide open and the big person ain't smart enough to let go.

I have ground squirrels (also locally called sage rats or sagebrush voles) digging up my back yard. My cats have been making short work of them. :D
What they don't get my .22 Henry rifle (with .22 Shorts, gotta be quiet in the new neighborhood  ) and I have been getting.
I removed the screen from the kitchen window and use the window sill as a rest and pop those rat like bastards. :x

Daughter, Son in Law, and myself did the Lake Pepin 3 Speed Tour a couple weekends ago. www.3speedtour.com Fifth time for me, third for Corky, first time for Jake.
Jake had a rude awaking, riding a bike can be tough. Especially if it's 95F and you are riding into the kind of winds that make you pedal downhill and gusts that stop you completely.
Anyway, here are a few pics.

Yeah the wide angle is nice, also it's adjustable from the go pro menu, 170' ultra wide angle, and 127' semi wide angle, haven't seen the need to use the 127' though.
haha weld, when i first herd the ambulance sirens i thought we were getting pulled over for some bs. rarely do i have to pull over for emergency vehicles, and then it happens the first day i film. i love the quality of this cam. every frame is completely clear, that ambulance was going like 40-50mph in that pic.

Yep, runs on white gas and need to pre-heat first.
Penny Stove? Is that the same as a pop can stove? I've made a few of those and some could boil a 10 oz can of water in less than two minutes. Others never made more than steam.

The Corvette, especially the C4 (compared to the C5's and 6's) is not an easy car to get in and out of. The newer generations are almost luxurious and practical by comparison, but they have lost some of their elemental sportiness in their comfort and complexity, IMHO.
The look of those early C3's makes me drool. THAT was the car I wanted ever since I was a kid. My (12 year) older sister dated a guy with a late 60's C3 when she was in high school and I was about 6. He took me for a ride in it and I'd never forgotten. :P

With the parking brake lever in the 91 C4 being left of the drivers seat, the, ah, possibility of, umm, snagging my, er, umm, package, as it were, upon exiting the vehicle was also a consideration leading to the purchase of the Wrangler. :D
I've already proven to myself that I can catch the top of my right foot on the door sill when getting out of the Jeep and execute a perfect 3 point faceplant, which is still preferable to the boys getting lanced.
